Description

Explore the wonders of ski touring in Skjomen, a secluded treasure nestled in Northern Norway. Located just 40 minutes from Narvik, this breathtaking fjord, surrounded by towering peaks exceeding 1600 meters, boasts steep granite walls and glistening glaciers. Unlike its more popular counterparts like Lofoten or Lyngen, Skjomen remains tranquil and untouched, offering unparalleled ski touring opportunities.

Having resided in Narvik for some time, Skjomen holds a special place in my heart. Its slightly milder climate compared to surrounding areas ensures snow-capped peaks well into early summer. Despite its immense beauty and exceptional ski terrain, Skjomen has remained off the beaten path.

Embark on unforgettable ski tours to iconic peaks such as Meraftestinden standing proudly at 1348 meters, or the awe-inspiring Gagnesaksla at 1318 meters, providing panoramic views of the Frostisen glacier. For the adventurous, dare to conquer the formidable Gagnesrenna, a thrilling 1000-meter couloir descending directly to the fjord, or challenge yourself with the lofty summit of Frostisen reaching 1724 meters.

Conveniently located just 40 minutes from Narvik, Skjomen is ideal for shorter expeditions lasting 4-6 days. Experience the comforts of a newly constructed, premium Airbnb lodge in Skjomen, ensuring a cozy retreat after exhilarating days on the slopes. Narvik is easily accessible by train from Sweden, bus from Fauske, or via Evenes airport.

Trips are available from mid-March to early June, spanning 4-7 days, catering primarily to smaller groups with intermediate to advanced ski touring skills. To enhance flexibility and affordability, accommodations consist of self-catering Airbnb lodgings rather than traditional hotels. As Skjomen lacks amenities, all provisions must be brought from Narvik.

With the arrival of mid-May, revel in the marvel of 24-hour daylight amidst abundant snow on the lofty, glaciated peaks. Experience the surreal phenomenon of skiing corn snow under the midnight sun on north-facing slopes. Depending on snow conditions, accommodation in mountain huts at higher elevations may be arranged closer to the tour date, ensuring an unforgettable adventure in the pristine wilderness of Skjomen.

Ski Guide

Originally from Germany, I have been living and skiing in many places in the world. Austria, Canada, Japan, Armenia to name a few. Currently, I divide his home between mountains of Norway and Georgia. He have been a professional/sponsored ski-alpinist, with several first ski descents on 5000-6000m summits in the Caucasus, Andes, Tien Shan and Pamirs.
Nowadays I prefer to ski guide people into more gentle, but nevertheless stunning mountain areas, and I enjoy to see and rediscover the beauty of the mountains with my guests.

I have been working for many years as avalanche technician (avalanche safety consulting and forecasting), avalanche courses instructor and ski guide in Norway and Georgia.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
