The primarily Mediterranean climate of Greece features mild and wet winters, and hot and dry summers. In the mountainous areas an alpine climate dominates, bringing heavy snowfalls to the slopes.
With over 21 million passengers coming through its doors every year, the Athens International Airport is the busiest in the country and the likely first stop in your travels to Greece.
If you’re coming to Greece for rock climbing, then fortunately it’s possible to climb all year round. However, the peak periods to visit are the spring months of April and May, and the autumn months of September and October. If you’re coming to ski, then head to Greece from January to March.
Located in the south of Europe, and with a population of 11 million, Greece is composed of a mainland and a huge number of islands, of which 227 are inhabited. With approximately 80% of the country mountainous, it is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts, especially hikers and rock climbers. Situated at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, the geography of Greece has been hugely influential in its history, culture, and traditions.
Good trip, but Babis did not allow for his perhaps unusual clients. He was too keen to do everything at super-fast speed, and get to the refuges early. A slower pace would have suited us better. Also he did not brief us adequately on what to expect, and give advice on facilities and rules of the refuges.
We climbed with Joe and he was amazing! Very knowledgeable about climbing, kept us calm and was very encouraging for our first climb. We are thankful for the skills we learnt and next time we are in Kalymnos we will be seeking Joe’s assistance again. Thank you very much!
Pavlos was an excellent guide. Highly professional and accommodating. He was able to match my limited skills with beautiful climbs, while also appropriately challenging me. He was very knowledgeable of Greek history and went above and beyond his role as a guide to help me gain a better understanding of Greece. He was humble about his many mountaineering accomplishments and success in media production only sharing information after I ask. You would be very lucky to spend the day with such an interesting and beautiful person. It was one of the highlights of my week in Greece.
Pavlos is incredible. The entire day was so relaxed and entirely personalized to my preferences and skill level. He took me to some beautiful crags near Athens overlooking a village, and even dropped me off at my ferry afterward! He even taught me lead climbing strategies, since I’d only led a couple times before. 17/10 would recommend! The experience will be much more enjoyable if you have prior climbing experience, and you need to be able to belay Pavlos (don’t worry, he’s not that heavy!)
Booking the trip was smooth and easy. Pavlos was a great guide. He set up a trip that included climbing spots for both my wife and I (we climb at different grades). He was very thoughtful in making the trip fun and challenging for us both. The stories he told about his adventures (he’s climbing Everest) were wonderful. He also took us to into the nearby town so we could enjoy local food. It was a great trip and I would certainly recommend Pavlos and explore-share.
