The high rugged mountains of Montenegro have been largely left untouched by the outside world. Yet the country is becoming a hotspot for winter sport as its reputation snowballs. The rising rugged peaks of the north hang over pristine, sparkling lakes that are home to a depth of biodiversity. Visit during the winter months for prime skiing conditions.
The state of Montenegro is located in the southeast of Europe, resting on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. It is bordered to the north by Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the east by Serbia and Kosovo, to the south by Albania, and to the west by Croatia. The ancient lands of the country hold a collection of outside cultural influences, including the empires of both Byzantine and Ottoman, the federation of Yugoslavia, and a number of periods of independence.
The climate of Montenegro varies from Mediterranean along the coast regions to continental as you move more inland. Here the winters are cooler given the higher altitude. And in the far north, the highlands resemble an alpine climate.
