With the Julian Alps, heavy forests, lingering cold winters, and a oft-forgotten charm, Slovenia has the makings of a perfect ski touring destination. Take on its iconic Mt. Triglav or head to the northwest border alongside Austria and Italy – either way, you are bound to have an unforgettable experience ski touring within this enchanting country.
Slovenia is a European country snuggled between Croatia to the south and east, Austria to the north, Italy to the west, and Hungary to the northeast. Parts of the Julian Alps lie within its borders, both aesthetically stunning and a skiing paradise. It is a mountainous country that is known for its wilderness, with more than half of its land covered in forests. Triglav National Park is a huge draw for skiers and snowboarders. It is named after Mt. Triglav, which is the highest peak of the country and a symbol of Slovenia. Ski touring from the radiating valleys and gorges from Triglav, the Kannin-Sella, and Karavanke make for a rare experience that is one part breathtaking, one part heart-pumping, and completely unforgettable.
Weather in the mountainous country of Slovenia is ideal for ski touring. In the high-altitude regions it has an alpine climate, while the rest of the country has a coastal climate (on the west) and a continental climate to the east. Snowfall is heavy, particularly in the northwest, and provides a playground for adventurers and skiers up for their dream remote ski trip.
Flying into Brnik outside of Ljubljana is the most common way to get to Slovenia. Trains also run regularly to its capital and most populous city. To get into Triglav, trains can take you from Ljubljana to Bled. The roads between Slovenia and its neighbors make car and bus travel simple. Trains from Venice, Zagrab, or Graz are also common ways to get to Slovenia.
Visit in winter for the best conditions. Pay attention to the forecast, as many of the best ski touring locations can receive high levels of snow. Anywhere from late December to early April will provide the ideal environment for your trip.
Unfortunately, due to high avalanche risk, we were unable to start the Triglav traverse. Instead we enjoyed 3 day trips touring around Kranjska Gora. Mitja is a fantastic guide, going out of his way to look after us, and taking us to some great spots. On a traverse snow conditions are secondary, but for day trips I would recommend coming earlier in the season, as the snow in April was a little warm and wet even at 2400m. Slovenia is beautiful and Mitja is very highly recommended, we’ll be back!
Absolutely incredible trip. Rok knows exactly where the best snow is and will go out of his way to ensure you push yourself whilst staying safe. I couldn’t recommend it enough.
Me and my friend did 2 days guided ski tours with Mitja in March 2017. We climbed Triglav, and second day Jalovec. We are both experienced ski tourers, we decided for guided tour because Julien alps are much more technically difficult than Austrian alps where we usually go. First winter ski touring in Julien alps and first guided tour in our life. Our experience with Mitja overcome expectations. He is very well organised, experienced and confident, his approach to clients very direct, honest but friendly as well. I felt safe with him in more exposed parts of our climb, and trusted his decisions and recommendations. I learned a lot about safety in mountains in general and will go with him in future again.
After an excellent experience with Mitja who led us to Triglav in summer 2016 we have decided to try also ski touring with him in February 2017. It was our first experience with ski touring at all. Mitja was able to manage all equipment and logistics for us so that we could focus on enjoying the two trips in two consecutive days. Although the weather was uncertain Mitja managed to select the locations (one around Kranjska Gora and second close to Pokljuka) where we enjoyed the tours a lot. It was simply amazing. We felt secure and can recommend Mitja as an excellent choice. Czech team: Jirka, David, Tomas, Libor
The Triglav Traverse with Mitja was a highlight for me in winter 2016. We toured through fairytale like landscapes and skied fresh lines every day. I am still puzzled how little ski touring is popular in Slovenia so far, which allowed Mitja to lead us to many amazing places without running into other skiers. Coming from Switzerland I am used to crowds and busy huts on days with such great conditions – and I was very happy to have had this alternative Slovenian experience with so much peacefulness! Mitja kept a good eye on all members of our group of 4 people and went big lengths to make it an unforgettable experience for all of us.
I have met Mitja in 2014 and have made more then 10 trips with him since then. Mostly we go on ski-touring trips in Slovenian Alps, among those the most epic was our 3-day traverse of Julian Alps, topped with winter ascent of Mt. Triglav (highest peak in Slovenia). Mitja is a very professional mountain guide, always cheerful and full of information. He is very aware of local conditions and can find best snow conditions, no matter what time of the season. Highly recommended for people who want to advance in their mountaineering skills or just have the best time in the mountains!
We had a great ski touring experience! Well planned, brilliant and nice guides – an awesome and recommendable company for everyone interested in adventures and life-long memories.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures!
