What should I know about Mountain Climbing Aconcagua?

Located in the Argentine province of Mendoza near the Chilean border, Aconcagua is a towering mountain that draws climbers from all around the world. At 6,961 meters, it is the highest mountain outside of Asia, and the tallest peak in both the Southern and Western hemispheres. The Normal Route and the Polish Traverse are the most popular routes to the summit. Both are non-technical climbs that are nevertheless extremely challenging due to their cold temperatures and the incredibly high altitude involved. Most climbing trips are completed expedition style and last approximately 3 weeks.

Although its ascent involves a strenuous physical and mental effort, reaching its summit is not as technical as many people think. Bear in mind, however, that altitude and rough weather conditions pose a very important challenge. An excellent fitness level, good acclimatization and the company of a certified and experienced guide are key to a safe experience. Choose between shorter-than-average programs and longer expeditions that include acclimatization and extra weather days.

The guide did the absolute minimum he could possibly do. The food provided was definitely not enough for what we were doing. This was already a fast itinerary and he cut it short by two more days. It made it extremely dangerous for us as clients. 2 of the 5 of us had to get flown off the mountain by helicopter due to edema because we didn’t acclimate properly. The guide then lied on social media and claimed 100% success to the summit. He really is a snake. He only cared about cutting everything and doing it as cheap as possible, most likely just to make a few more bucks. If this was a service offered in the U.S., there would’ve been a lawsuit. He should never guide this trip ever again for the pure safety of the clients.

The trip to Aconcagua with Gastón was really nice. Gaston was a great guide and we all learned a lot from him. In addition to his mountaineering skills he is an excellent story teller and we enjoyed his company a lot. It was unfortunate that we were not able to summit, but I was expecting that may be the case with weather so I was not disappointed. All in all, I was really pleased of the service, food, wine, company, mountain. I can not think of anything bad to say.

Gaston is the most experienced guide and trustworthy person that I've ever met in my life. We summited Aconcagua in 9 days and it was the best adventure in my life. Definitely recommend!

Gaston Oyarzun is obviously an excellent climber/mountaineer, but he lacks a great deal of organization/logistics. This applies to all aspects of the expedition, from food to itinerary.
