FAQs: Mountain Climbing in Switzerland

What should I know about Mountain Climbing Switzerland?

Switzerland is a central European country at the heart of the Alps. It shares borders with Germany, France, Italy, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Its famous peaks, many of which are included among the tallest on the continent west of the Caucasus, are some of the most popular for mountaineering and climbing. The lakes in the south of the country are destinations in their own right. Its high-altitude peaks are also popular for skiing and snowboarding – ski touring and splitboarding are exhilarating ways to parlay a classic mountaineering trip into an all-encompassing Alpine immersion. Be on the lookout for the classic charm of Swiss valleys like Engadine or Lotschental that remind you why Switzerland is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Why should I choose Switzerland for my Mountain Climbing adventure?

Classic Climbs!

"Swiss" and "Alps" go together like "mountain" and "climbing." Some of Europe's best climbs, for one reason or another, are located in this beautiful country designed specifically to cater to Alpinism. The Matterhorn leads the way, but so many more mountains - Rigi, Eiger, Santis,, etc. - will give you the mountaineering experience that simply doesn't exist anywhere else.

Dufourspitze!

Head to the top of the country's tallest mountain! Dufourspitze (4,634m) is a journey worth its weight in gold, and as the highest peak of Monte Rosa it has all the exciting challenges a daunting summit should. With appropriate acclimatization, this ascent will give you plenty of glacier time on your way to the rocky summit ridge and a fulfilling Alpine climb.

Unprecedented Mountain Scenery!

While the Alps may dominate the skyline and the itinerary, don't forget to check out the valleys and meadows of this incredible country. Switzerland has a strong claim to both Lake Lugano and Lake Geneva, representative features of its diverse landscape. For those willing to look, the Swiss countryside will impress you in more ways than one.

What is the Weather Like

The weather is surprisingly accommodating. The relatively close proximity to the Mediterranean makes the south pleasant. The temperate climate gives way to glaciated mountain peaks - ideal for alpinists.

Which language is predominantly spoken in Switzerland?

German, French, Italian

What currency is accepted in Switzerland?

Swiss franc (CHF)

How to Get There

Switzerland is in the middle of Europe. Its major transportation hubs are Geneva, Bern, and Zurich. Trains and roads both run efficiently within the borders, and most destinations are designed to assist mountaineers and winter sport enthusiasts. If flying into Lugano seems like too-ambitious an affair, Milan, in Italy, will help you access the lakes in the south of the country.

What’s the country code of Switzerland?

+41

What’s the high season for Mountain Climbing in Switzerland?

The best time for mountain climbing in Switzerland is in the summer, when the weather tends to be less volatile. It can get packed on some peaks during the high season, so planning a trip at the edges of the June to September spectrum can be equally satisfying.

Tobias is an amazing guide. He guided me for the Riffelhorn and a Hornli Ridge 2 day Matterhorn climb. He knew the route well and made sure we were safe the whole time. He also shifted the days because the weather was bad for the original booked days. Best guide in Zermatt, I will definitely try to book him for all future trips in this region.

How was my trip? AWESOME. The service at Explore-Share is superb. And the guide I had, Elis, was just great. Every moment on my climb I felt super safe with him. Had so much fun climbing the Matterhorn. Thank you!

Renzo is a considerate, skilful guide and a good companion. Highly recommended. Under the conditions we climbed in (i.e. warm and cloudy) the route is less highly rated. The track through the "Eck" was much more demanding than Goedecke suggests in his book "4000er" and I would only attempt it again earlier in the year. Renzo took loads of photos so that was good. Grazie Mille!
