FAQs: Slovakia

What should I know about Slovakia?

Slovakia is a small landlocked country in central Europe. The south of the country is dominated by the Danube River plains, so you have to head to the north, toward the Polish border to find the most exciting outdoor adventure spot.

Here is where the High Tatras Mountains are located. The High Tatras are the tallest peaks of the Carpathian Range, which stretches all the way into Romania.

They are truly a special range, boasting several National Parks, the highest peak in the Carpathians – Mount Gerlach (2.655 meters) – and a UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves!

Along with being an excellent venue for all types of outdoor sport, from hiking to ice climbing, the mountains are home to numerous unique forms of wildlife and serve as the cradle for central European high altitude culture. Don’t miss your chance to explore this truly unique spot!

Why should I choose Slovakia for my adventure?

Stunning scenery

From the moment you land at the airport, Slovakia’s natural beauty will be ever-present. This is only amplified once you arrive in the High Tatras region. Boasting snow-capped mountains, gorgeou evergreen forests and pristine mountain lakes, the High Tatras are easily as scenic as the Alps.

Beautiful Bratislava

Just about any trip to Slovakia begins with a flight into the international airport outside of the capital. Take some time to explore the city, which encapsulates so many different time periods. Take a walking tour of the historic downtown and visit the Habsburg castle, before trying some of the local food and beer.

Plenty of variety

Whatever your outdoor activity of choice is, Slovakia has something for you. The country has a rich mountain-sport culture, so rock climbing, hiking, ice climbing and mountaineering can be found in abundance in the High Tatras. This location is also a winter sport hotspot with ice climbing and ski touring both immensely popular and widely practiced throughout the range too.

What can I expect from the weather in Slovakia?

During the summer, temperatures are quite mild in the Tatras Mountains and rain – but not thunderstorms – occur frequently. During the winter, temperatures are usually below freezing for the entire season, with plenty of snowfall at the beginning of January and late December.

How can I get to Slovakia?

Most trips to Slovakia begin with a flight into M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS). The airport offers connections from London, Rome, Madrid and Brussels.

We had a wonderful trip with Michal. He met with us the evening before to go over the plan for the via Ferrata and answered all our questions. He took some wonderful photos of the trip and was so patient with our children. We felt completely safe the whole time and highly recommend the trip!

Given its lofty name, Paradise National Park could have been setting itself up to be underwhelming, but it didn't disappoint! It truly is a paradise if you, like me, can't get enough of primeval woodland, stunning waterfalls and a bit of adventure along the way! Marcel was the perfect guide, and his years in the business of guiding and also mountain rescue really shone through. As well as answering all my questions about the park from a nature point of view, he also gave me a fascinating overview of Slovakia's cultural/political history. This was my first-ever attempt at via ferrata and he gave me a great crash course on the equipment and safety procedures so I felt fully prepared. I am now a fully committed fan and will definitely be signing up to more via ferrata trips! Thanks for a fantastic day, Marcel.
