FAQs: Splitboarding in Japan

What should I know about Splitboarding Japan?

Japan is one of the world’s top destinations for splitboarding, which combines backcountry skiing with snowboarding. Hokkaido may be one of the most popular spots to head out on the board, but it is far from the only one.

Just an hour by train outside of Tokyo, Mount Fuji is a fan-favourite spot to head out on your splitboard. Spend a day climbing up to the top on the skins of the separated skis before getting an early start the next day to see the sunrise and careen down the mountain on your board.

Nearby to Hokkaido, the island of Rishiri is offers incredible ocean views and plenty of excellent splitboarding too. Niseko and Sapporo are also nearby to the splitboarding hotspot and offer other excellent options as well.

Why should I choose Japan for my Splitboarding adventure?

Stunning scenery

There is plenty of natural beauty to see in the mountains of Japan. Enjoy evergreen forests, incredible views out over mountains and valleys, and incredible descents while facing the turquoise-blue sea. From Hokkaido to Kochi, there is no shortage of incredible sights to see.

Perfect powder

Not only is Japan renowned for the quantity of powder that it receives each year, but also the incredibly high quality too. Due to its northerly location and proximity to the Sea of Japan, humid air envelopes the western slopes of the mountains, dropping deep and fluffy snow that is perfect for splitboarding.

Come for the culture

Since you can’t spend all your time out on the slopes, take some time at the end of each day to explore this unique culture. Try out the local cuisine, experience the architecture and even stay in a local hotel. By the time you leave Japan, you’ll not only be in love with the incredible landscapes, but the people too.

What can I expect from the weather in Japan?

During the winter, Japan is quite cold and gets plenty of snow. Temperatures and snowfall do vary, but from Mount Fuji to Hokkaido, it is usually below freezing during the winter. Due to its proximity to the Sea of Japan, most of the mountainous areas also receive plenty of snowfall, averaging 10 to 16 meters per season!

How do I get there

Any trip to Japan begins with a flight into either the Haneda International Airport (HND) or Narita International Airport (NRT). From here, you can take a regional flight or the famous bullet train on to your final destination.

Hello there, I didn't go on a guided tour and it wasn't intended to go there on the 14th February. I still had been chating with the guide Wataru, about the dates and arrangements. At 14th February it was never intended to go on a tour. Sorry, maybe my fault, but this did go wrong. Actually I have no access the chating-protocol with Waturu anymore to proof that we were still trying to find a date. Due to an infect I'm not going to be able to go on a tour with Waturu before I leave. Would you please be so kind to consider a refund of my payment, as to the above mentioned reasons. Kind regards Sascha

We spent 2 exceptional days in Hokkaido with Daisuke-san. He is very experienced and knowledgeable about the local conditions, about the mountains and about places to go in general. Even after our trip with him had ended, Daisuke-san came to our rescue when we had technical troubles. We feel privileged to have shared his company for two days, and we will never forget our time in Hokkaido with him.
