Type of Trip
(or canyoning up waterfalls) is a typically Japanese sport and is for advanced outdoor enthusiasts who would enjoy rock climbing, mountaineering and / or backcountry skiing or snowboarding.
I recommend a programme at Red Canyon, which is also my favourite and the one I have visited the most. It can be easily accessed from Kansai and Chubu areas, and the itinerary offers a wonderful scenery as well.
It is located in the Suzuka Mountains, in Shiga prefecture, and the attraction of this canyon is the deep forests and beautiful waterfall and basin. We can enjoy both shower climbing and swimming. You will also encounter a 4m “jump-rock” during tour. This course is not too long, but it is steep and there are also sections of down climbing.
July through to September is the recommended time for this programme, as the cold water from the mountains will feel refreshing during this period of time.
I also recommend to add an optional Japanese meal plan at the mountain trout farm nearby. Please contact me for reservation.
Required Levels: You need to be in good health and over 20-year-old. You need to be comfortable with approximately 3-4 hours of walking in a day, covering a distance of 2.6km and a vertical ascent of 230m.

About the Guide
I am a JMGA certified mountain and ski / snowboarding guide. I was born in Shiga prefecture, where I still live, and have been snowboarding since 1999. I’ve been a backcountry guide since 2007
My passion is travelling and backcountry snowboarding. My guiding style is to travel to snowboard, and during the winter season, I travel from Hokkaido to Western Japan (Gifu) chasing the snow with my clients.
I am not a pro snowboarder that decorates the front page of free ride magazines nor am I a super climber on high peaks abroad, but my speciality is to understand what clients seek and to guide accordingly.
My slogan is “To guide with maximum effort! Enjoy with clients! And by all means, safely!!”
Please join me to have fun in the backcountry fields all over Japan!
