Highlights

  • Go on an authentic winter mountaineering ascent to the top of Veleta

  • Enjoy a relatively easy and progressive climb

  • Use crampons and ice axe along some sections

Join me on this alpine experience, nearby Granada city, at the Sierra Nevada mountain range, climbing Veleta Peak (3.396m), the third highest mountain on continental Spain, a real winter mountaineering journey. This is an ideal opportunity for a first alpine mountaineering ascent.

Veleta, or Pico del Veleta, is easily recognizable from Granada and it became, somehow, a symbol of the city and of the whole mountain range. Despite its altitude, it is relatively easy to climb, even for people without alpine hiking experience.

The gentle slopes of Veleta offer a relatively easy, progressive ascent, with no objective risks. It is the perfect mountain for a first contact with the use of ice axe and crampons, which I will provide you with before the ascent.

We will meet at the Sierra Nevada Ski resort and after meeting your guide, checking the required alpine gear and getting some safety instructions, we will directly start the climb. The itinerary follows the normal route, descending over the same route.

At the very top of the mountain we are surrounded by spectacular winter scenery, with 365º views over the entire Sierra Nevada range, covered in snow. The nearby Mulhacén (the highest mountain of mainland Spain) seems to be so close! There are also views to the Mediterranean Sea and, on a clear day, you can also see the Rif Mountains of Africa.

This route is offered during the winter months (from December to mid May,depending on the winter season), when it has much more interest. However, we can also guide it the whole year. During the Summer season we advise to choose other more interesting routes in Sierra Nevada.

Just contact me if you want to join me on this winter mountaineering experience. Book your trip and I will take you to the top of Veleta Peak in the Siera Nevada.

I also offer other mountaineering trips in Sierra Nevada and the Pyrenees. Check them out!

What People are Saying about Jon Sanz

Jon was an excellent guide. He was responsive and detailed prior to the hike regarding equipment preparation as well as keeping us up to date on weather conditions and various scenarios we may encounter. Jon was very knowledgeable, not just from a technical standpoint but also the history and area itself. We had a great experience and would use Jon again in the near future for the next climb.

At our designated departure time it was raining and looking very unlikely that we would even get out of town, let alone get to climb. Jon took us through the weather for the area and said there as a good chance we’d summit the next day if we were willing to take the chance. We did and so got the chance to summit the next day. Jon took me up off the usual routes and showed me some lovely parts of the mountain. As we climbed many others were turning back but Jon found a safe path mostly out of the weather and we managed to summit a few hours later. Jon’s knowledge of the weather, Mt Mulhacen, the surrounding area and Spanish history added another level to the experience. He is a very capable mountaineer and a guide who knows his clients early and knows how to get the best out of them. I highly recommend Jon if you are looking for a guide to help you achieve your goals. Pete

Top guide top trip :). First of all Jon is excellent went over and above so I could join the group which meant booking my hostel and getting breakfast the night before, waking after 12 pm to let me in then translating for me in English the whole time. Top guide and I hope to climb with him again soon. Thanks John. Monte Perido National park is stunning much nicer than I expected. This is a great trip and I would highly recommend.
