Description

The Toubkal massif, in Morocco, is the highest point in Northern Africa. This trip is designed as a true challenge. An exotic trip to escape for a long weekend. In fact, the objective of this program is to climb the iconic, easily accessible peak, 4167 m high.

This is a rather short and intense trip. You need to be in very good physical shape, ready to face the altitude and the active ascent right after leaving the plane. Even though the ascent has no particular technical difficulties, the steepness, vertical drop and altitude can be hard to withstand without acclimatization.

From Marrakech, it takes a 1:45 h drive to reach Imlil, the Moroccan Chamonix. Imlil is our starting point, the base camp for all the ascents of the massif.

Are you interested in ascending the Toubkal massif? Then please get in touch with me for more information! I would love to guide you in this intense adventure in Morocco.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech airport - Imlil - Sidi Chamarouch - Toubkal refuge

Distance: 9km – Altitude change +1460m / -1000m.

After crossing the Haouz plain, the road goes through the Moulay Brahim gorges to Asni, before following the Assif Ait Mizane in Imlil. Imlil (1740m) is the starting point of the Toubkal massif hikes. Here we meet the mule drivers team. We start the ascent in a zigzag path with views over the Aremd village, perched on an ancient glacial moraine. Then we progress along the Ait Mizane valley to the sacred site Sidi Chamharouch, where we have a picnic. The landscape becomes more alpine with high summits dominating the valley. After 5 hours walking, we arrive to the Toubkal refuge (3207m). Overnight in lodge or camp.

Day 2: Toubkal refuge - Toubkal summit - Imlil - Marrakech

Distance: 17km – Altitude change +960m / -2220m.

Very early breakfast and departure to avoid the crowds and enjoy an unforgettable sunrise from the highest point of Northern Africa! The ascent begins with a steep section in a scree, before reaching the trail that follows the bottom of a ravine to the Toubkal pass (3975m). We can already see the summit. There are no technical difficulties, but the path between blocks and altitude remind us that we are in the high mountains! We continue on a less steep ridge until the summit. There are magnificent 360° views of the Anti Atlas, the whole Toubkal massif as well as the Haouz plain and Marrakech.

After a short pause, we take the same route back until the refuge, where we have a snack. Then we descend to Imlil. After lunch, transfer to Marrakech and checkin at the Foucault hotel. The evening will be an opportunity to enjoy the Medina and the djema el’fnaa square, always spectacular.

Day 3: Marrakech - Transfer to airport

Breakfast and transfer to the airport depending on your flight time.
