I invite you to a 2-day adventure climbing Mount Tronador, an emblematic peak in North Patagonia, standing between the borders of Argentina and Chile.
Mount Tronador has three peaks and the International Peak is the highest one, at 3478m. In this trip, we’ll reach this peak via White Glacier.
The first ascent to this mountain was carried out by climber Hermann Claussen in 1934, on the east side. However, the Claussen climbing route is quite difficult as it requires ice climbing and snow.
I recommend climbing through White Glacier and the northwestern side, which is considered the most accessible route. It consists on a large glacier cruise to surround the mountain from the Argentine side to the Chilean side, from which we’ll ascend snowy slopes of not more than 40°.
Anyway, the route is quite challenging, so you’ll need previous experience and good physical condition.
The starting point for this adventure will be the city of Bariloche. Once there, we’ll have a 2-hour trip to Pampa Linda, the base of Mount Tronador.
For the first part of the trip we’ll ride horses. Then we’ll trek uphill to Tronador’s shelter, surrounded by a beautiful volcanic landscape.
On the second day, we’ll face the summit! The itinerary follows the White glaciar to access the White col. Once there, we continue to the base of the north face of the International Peak.
The whole route is glacier trek. Only to access the White glacier and also at the final ramp to the summit you’ll go through a bit steeper slopes. Nevertheless, none of this will require climbing techniques.
On a peaceful ascent, making regular breaks and enjoying the ascension, the estimated an average round trip time to the shelter will be about 10 hours.
Please contact me if you like the idea of climbing Tronador’s International Peak. I’ll be happy to be your guide in one of the most iconic and challenging ascents in Bariloche area!
