Where better than Iceland to learn how to ice climb? This two-day beginner’s ice climbing course will give you all the technical knowledge you need to get started in the sport.
Over the course of two days, I or another certified guide will teach you the basic ice climbing skills and techniques. The first day is an evening class in a classroom, so we will focus on theory. You will learn the most important climbing knots and how to properly use climbing equipment. You will also learn how to set up climbing anchors. We’ll end the class by planning our day trip to an Icelandic glacier.
The second day of the class will be out on the glacier, where you will practice what you have learned. Though this program’s goal is instruction, you should also enjoy the incredible icy landscape of Iceland’s beautiful glaciers. On this day, you will spend a lot of time practicing with crampons and ice axes. Everyone will take turns setting up anchors and climbing belayed by an instructor. In free moments you can look around and admire the gorgeous setting.
The strength of this ice climbing course is its combination of lecture and practical application. This way, you can apply what you’ve learned under the watch of a certified instructor and receive feedback. By the end of the ice climbing course, you should feel prepared to do some beginning level climbing on your own.
If you’re ready to learn to ice climb, contact me today! I will let you know the dates of the next ice climbing course and answer any questions you might have.
Looking for the climbing practice without the classroom instruction? I also lead a guided ice climbing day tour in Svinafellsjokull.
During the evening session I’ll introduce all the different ice climbing equipment and talk about the climbing process. We will then go over the main knots used in climbing (e.g. figure of eight, bowline, girth hitch and prussic knots) and learn how to set up main anchors. We’ll finish by making a travel plan for our ice climbing day out on the glacier.
Full day practical session
During our day on the glacier, we go over the process of ice climbing and general climbing movements, such as how to use crampons and ice axes correctly. We will also practice making main anchors, V-threads and rappelling with a safety prussic. Climbing will be done with a top rope under the guidance of a climbing instructor.
