The Besh Tash trekking expedition explores part of the Talas Range in the Tian Shan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan. It is an A to B trek with 2 temporary base camps set along the way.
From base camps we’ll make day ascents of nearby trekking peaks and alpine ridges. Peaks and surrounding ridges in this area are on average between 3700m and 4200m altitude. The area we are looking at has about 5 peaks above 4000m.
Walking is not technical, no ropes or climbing gear are required. We look specifically at trekking peaks and ridgeline walks. Terrain will be mostly off track and may include; grass, dirt, rock, scree, moraine or small sections of snow. Some light scrambling may be required.
Kyrgyzstan is mostly wind swept high altitude valleys, there are few trees and navigation is relatively straightforward.
This expedition is semi-exploratory. While the area is well researched and we have been through it, some of the peaks and ridges we will be attempting for the first time. The joy of this trip is in the genuine sense of discovery and raw thrill of exploring somewhere new.
It’s important to realise that failure is just as much a part of expedition life as success, and we need to be prepared to turn back to Base Camp, or try another line, if we cannot reach a particular peak or ridge. We re-group daily to make new plans for the following day.
Having Base Camps along the way gives people flexibility to rest if needed and change plans as necessary.
We’ll be driven in and out of the trek in 4WD’s, trek support will be with horses, we’ll sleep in tents and eat simple, but wholesome camp food. Life in the mountains is basic but beautiful.
We’ll encounter traditional nomadic life throughout the expedition. The Kyrgyz are semi nomadic, moving their herds and yurts to the higher pastures, Jailoos, every summer. Life in the Jailoos is much the same as it was hundreds of years ago. Horses and sheep, shepherds and children run wild about the hills and other travellers are always welcome guests.
Please find here below the day by day program and itinerary.
Day 1: Arrive Bishkek, Transfer to Base Camp, set camp, explore.
Drive from Bishkek to the Talas Valley. We’ll set camp in the foothills of the Talas Range, south of Kara Oi Village, somewhere along the Jery Ur River. Camp will be amidst local yurts and nomads at around 2500m. We’ll have a good chance to acclimatize before we begin climbing tomorrow.
Day 2: Ascend Ashu Tor Pass plus possible Peak 4074
Today we ascend the Ashu Tor pass at 3644m. We’ll set camp somewhere near the pass, before continuing on to try for a 4074m peak nearby, from where we can scope tomorrow’s ascent.
Day 3: Peak 4267
From Ashu Tor pass we’ll try ascend the 4267m peak nearby.
Day 4: Jarlu Tor Pass and up Chyrkanak River towards Chyrkanak Glacier
Today we have an all day walk dropping to the Bala Chychkan River at 2500m, back up over the Jarlu Tor Pass at 3527m then south along the Chychkan River towards the glacier at the end of the valley. We’ll set camp for another few nights to attempt either Peak 4133 or Peak 4378.
Day 5: Peak 4133 or Peak 4376
From base camp we’ll set out to attempt either Peak 4133 or Peak 4378.
Day 6: Ridgeline walk to Kalba Pass, descending to the Uzon Tor River
We strike camp today making our way out of the Chychkan Valley, along a ridgeline around 3700m, before descending into the Uzon Tor River Valley at around 3000m.
Day 7: Ascend Lt Argar Pass to Besh Tash Lake
A soft rolling ascent over Lt Argar Pass at 3500m before slowly descending to the beautiful Besh Tash Lake at 3000m. A well earned dip in a pristine alpine lake is a wonderful end to an amazing expedition. Our last night in tents before we meet vehicles to drive us back to civilization.
