During these amazing 11 days, you will live the excitement of climbing 5 incredible summits: Pasochoa, Corazon, North Illiniza, Cayambe and Chimborazo. A trip full of challenges, mountainous giants, Andean forests and stunning landscapes that you’ll never forget.
Here I leave an estimate program with the itinerary of these 11 days enjoying the amazing Cayambe and Chimborazo summits and many other peaks.
DAY 1: QUITO
Arrival to Quito and transfer to the hotel. If we have time we can visit the legendary Line of Equador, the middle of the earth.
DAY 2: QUITO- PASOCHOA SUMMIT- MACACHI
Early in the morning, we leave Quito to be taken to the first trailhead of this trip. We start the a hike through an amazing primary Andean forest, great for bird watching. Once we get to Pasochoa Summit, you cannot believe what you are seeing: the surrounding snow-capped mountains of Antisana, Cayambe, Illinizas, Cotopaxi and even Chimborazo if the sky is clean. Then, a transfer to Machachi town and overnight in a hotel.
DAY 3: CORAZON SUMMIT (4.786m)
After driving south through the Avenue of the Volcanoes, we will get to “El Chaupi” and then, finally to our new trailhead. The first part of the hike takes us up through the small Andean grass. Then, we will get on the sandy and scramble section, which leads to our next goal: Corazon summit. The total hiking time is about 8 hours. By late afternoon, we will return to Machachi.
DAY 4: MACHACHI- NUEVOS HORIZONTES HUT (4.750m)
We leave Machachi towards the village of “El Chaupi” by car. We will continue driving up until we get to “La Virgen parking lot”. Once in there, a 3-hour hike starts up to the Nuevos Horizontes Hut at 4.750 meters. We will relax for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner and sleep there.
DAY 5: NORTH ILLIZINA SUMMIT (5.126m)
Our next summit attempt will start early in the morning. After a light breakfast we will hike towards the saddle formed between both Illinizas peaks and then, to the North Illiniza summit. The approach to the top involves an easy 3-hour scrambling. Once at the summit, we will enjoy the amazing landscape. It will take us 7 hours round trip. Overnight in a hotel in Machachi.
DAY 6: MACHACHI – OLEAS RUALES HUT (4.600m)
After 3:30 hs drive we will get to Ruales Oleas Cayambe Hut. In the afternoon we will go to the glacier for ice practices and training. We will learn some basic techniques of proper handling of the climbing equipment (such as crampons, ice axe, rope). Dinner and rest in the hut.
DAY 7: CAYAMBE SUMMIT – MACHACHI
Our day will start at midnight after another light breakfast. We will put our gear on and start our climb around 1 am. The ascent to Cayambe Summit at 5.790 meters of height will take about 6 – 7 hours. Once we get to this amazing summit we will take our time for pictures of the surroundings. We will head back to the hut for a resting moment but then, we must pack our belongings and drive to Machachi. Overnight in Machachi Hotel.
DAY 8: REST DAY IN MACHACHI
We will a relaxed day in the small town of Machachi. You have the option of visiting Tesalia Water Springs. If Sunday we will visit a local indigenous market (animal, fruits, goods). There are other options, like horseback riding, cow milking, guinea pigs tasting, etc. Overnight in the Hotel.
DAY 9: MACHACHI- WHYMPER HUT
From Machachi, we will drive southern trough the Avenue of the Volcanoes for about 3:30 hours to the Chimborazo Natural Reserve. We will walk up from Hermanos Carrel Hut to the Whimper’s Hut at 5.000m. We will have dinner there and get some rest until 11 pm. There will be an early light breakfast served just before we get our gear ready and start climbing up…
DAY 10: CHIMBORAZO SUMMIT – QUITO
We will start our ascent to the top of Ecuador’s highest mountain by midnight. Getting to Chimborazo summit will take us about 8 to 10 hours. We will get to its 6310-meter top early in the morning. It is a perfect place for resting and pictures of the beautiful Andean surroundings. We will start our descent to the hut for the next 3 or 4 hours. Once in Whymper Hut we will pack our gear and go down to Hermanos Carrel. There, a transfer will be waiting for us to take us back to Quito.
DAY 11: ENDING POINT
Transfer from the hotel to the airport of Quito, to fly back home. End of our services.
