Description

Straddling the border between Argentina and Chile, the spectacular and extinct Tronador stratovolcano in Patagonia is truly a wonder to behold!Located about 30km west of Bariloche, this goliath rises beyond the clouds to its highest point with El Pico summit at 3448m above sea level. The tallest mountain of the stunning Nahuel Huapi National Park, Mount Tronador has three summits and eight main glaciers that are emphasised by its height and imposition on the landscape!

El Pico is the easist summit to acess due to its proximity to the mountain refuge of Otto Meiling, which is where we can begin our ascent from.

This normal route is wonderful as it presents little technical difficulty and provides great glacier traversing with breathtaking vistas all the way!

On the first day we will leave Bariloche in the morning and head to Pampa Linda which is the base of the mountain and where we begin the trek.

From here we set off for Meiling refuge on a 4-5 hour hike, we’ll pass through the pristine forest and coming out the other side will begin to enjoy stunning views over the mountainside.

The day of the climb we will leave at about 4am and we will cover about 7.5km and 1350 metres in ascent and descent.

On route we will cross many glaciers and snow fields, with mostly smooth slopes. There may be some cracks in the glacier but we will be sure to use our ropes to ensure your safety.

The final path of 200 metres to the summit is steep and we will use our technical gear to ensure you can acsend smoothly. After a long and immensely rewarding rest at the summit we will return to the refuge.

The third day will see us descend from the refuge and return to Bariloche where you can really let your experience sink in!

You don’t need previous glacial experience but you will need to be in good physical condition for this trip. We will be hiking between 10-12 hours in the day and often at an incline of 40°.

If ascending this amazing mountain in the epic Patagonian region near Bariloche sounds exciting, then sign up now becuase this is not an experience to be missed!

It was an amazing trip!! We had no experience in paragliding but the guides made us feel very very safe, they have a lot of experience and are very professionals. If you are in Bariloche, don't miss the chance to fly with them. And also the Explore-Share team was always willing to help. 10/10!!

Pablo has been amazing during the 3 days we spent climbing. He's great at sharing his knowledge and constantly providing feedback for improvement. I definely recommend him and I plan on doing more with him in the future. As for the climbing itself, I'm totally satisfied and got to raise my experience quickly, finishing with a great multipitch climb.

The paragliding experience was unbelievable! Getting to see Bariloche and it's surrounding lake and mountains was breathtaking. I would definitely do this again. Pablo was an amazing guide. He was very knowledgable and had a lot of experience paragliding. He gave clear instructions on how to take off and made you feel safe every step of the away. Throughout the trip, he will capture pics and videos for you to take home. He was very friendly and always looked out for your best interest.

Overall, Pablo was great. The weather for the trip turned out to be perfect climbing weather. Pablo was extremely friendly, accommodating, and helpful. We discussed my skill level and what kind of climbs I wanted to do. Pablo definitely helped me push myself, in a good way of course. He appeared to be extremely knowledgable of the area and was able to pick out some really exciting routes that he knew I would enjoy. I didn't want the climbing to be too easy and I believe Pablo understood that and got us on some really cool routes that he knew I would like, but would also push my climbing skills. I felt very comfortable while climbing with him as well, even when we were 6 or 7 pitches up. He's an excellent lead climber and made even the crux pitches look easy. Overall, the trip was incredible, definitely a trip of a lifetime. I wish I would have been able to get a few more go pro pictures from him, but that's really not a big deal at all. The few pictures I received were pretty great! Overall, the trip was great and I would highly recommend Pablo to other climbers of any skill level.

Why did we choose Pablo for this trip? - We had real confidence that Pablo knew the mountain and could offer us the type of support we needed - Jo had a "gut feel" that he would be the right choice - You, Nicolas, were very diligent in responding to my email requests - Pablo offered to meet us at our hotel in Bariloche to provide some advice before our trip into the mountains Our experience - Our first meeting in the hotel in Bariloche was extremely useful - giving us lots of advice and helping us plan our walk for the week prior to meeting in Otto Meiling - It was clear that Pablo is the best mountain guide for Cerro Tronador - He practically lives on the mountain and clearly has much experience of leading groups with different abilities and skills - He was the previous person to summit before our trip, 10 days before - Pablo knew the route very well and was able to guide us across the weak snow bridges - His rope technique and focus on safety was very reassuring - He taught me some new rope/knot skills - Our second day, traversing the glacier towards Refugio Rocca was also very pleasant. It saved us much trekking time and gave Pablo an opportunity to teach us more about the glaciers on Cerro Tronador Our advice - I would suggest that Pablo has a better presence on the internet - we only found him by chance and yet he clearly is the best guide for this area - Perhaps some photos and quotations from a few satisfied clients would help?
