Description

This day hike that entails climbing Mount Taranaki (2518m), in the Egmont National Park on the North Island of New Zealand, is a memorable and exciting experience, and I will guide you as we tackle the steep elevation and rocky, volcanic terrain to reach the summit, where we are rewarded with sensational views out over the countryside and a new appreciation for what this mountain means to the Maori people.

Mount Taranaki is an active volcano located in Egmont National Park, in the Tarankai region on the North Island of New Zealand, and is an immensely popular tourist and climbing destination. The mountain has great cultural and historical significance to the Maori people of New Zealand.

Our adventure begins at the entrance of Egmont National Park, and from here we tackle the first section, rising up to 1492m. This section is full of gravelly, rocky tracks and contains some very steep parts.

We then arrive at the Tahurangi Lodge for a short break before we head off to reach the summit.

This longer part of the trip can be quite tricky, as the abundance of climbers has meant many rocks can come loose, causing a hazard. There are more massive boulders, steep sections and even crater ice to navigate, before we finally reach the summit, standing at 2518m above sea level.

The views out over the national park are truly glorious, and you will want to make sure you bring your camera to capture these epic memories.

We also learn about how important the mountain is to Maori people, with the peak of the mountain signifying its head, and everything below its bones.

We then finish by descending back down to our starting point, thrilled, weary and satisfied at having accomplished this magnificent achievement.

Climbing Mount Taranaki is something every outdoor enthusiast should try in New Zealand – book now to experience!
