Description

Climbing Ecuador’s three main volcanoes is a unique and memorable experience and one that is highly recommended.

Over the course of 16 days, we will climb the three tallest, each of which provides unique views and different challenges.

Cayambe will be the first volcano that we climb, introducing us to some South American glacier climbing as well as stunning views back over the Ecuadorian countryside. Cayambe is the tallest location that sits exactly on the equator and is also the coldest.

Following Cayambe, we will head to Cotopaxi, which is the second tallest mountain in Ecuador. In order to get here, we will head through the Avenue of the Volcanoes, which offers some of the most stunning views of Ecuador’s iconic mountain ranges.

The climb itself is not very technically challenging, but physically quite tiring. The volcano is considered the most beautiful in the whole country, however, so well worth the effort to climb it.

Chimborazo, which is the tallest mountain in Ecuador, will be our final target. Its main summit has the distinction of being the farthest point from the center of the Earth, which makes it the tallest mountain in the world in its own way.

While more difficult than the other two volcanoes, it is not overly technical either and presents incredible views out into the Avenue of Volcanoes as well as the rest of the Ecuadorian countryside.

In order to join the trip, you should have some basic mountaineering experience under your belt and be in good physical condition.

We recommend checking out our 3-day6-day and 8-day mountaineering courses in Washington state and Alaska if you don’t have any previous experience.

Day 2: Quito

We will spend the day touring Quito and seeing some of the city’s top spots, including the Old City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Due to the high altitude of our final destinations, we will spend two days getting used to climbing in the altitude. On the first day, we will ascend Rucu Pinchincha to 4.698 meters above sea level. The following day, we will hike to Parcacocha Lake at 3.733 meters in elevation.

Day 5 to 6: Cayambe preparation

Day 7 to 8: Cayambe approach and summit

We will hike up to the Cayambe hut and prepare for the climb the next day. The following day, we wake up early, at about midnight, and climb to the top of the volcano. Afterwards, we hike back down to Hacienda Pinsaqui.
