Highlights

  • Climb three of Ecuador's most iconic volcanoes.
  • Enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the top.
  • Take in some of the local culture along the way.

Description

Climbing Ecuador’s three main volcanoes is a unique and memorable experience and one that is highly recommended.

Over the course of 16 days, we will climb the three tallest, each of which provides unique views and different challenges.

Cayambe will be the first volcano that we climb, introducing us to some South American glacier climbing as well as stunning views back over the Ecuadorian countryside. Cayambe is the tallest location that sits exactly on the equator and is also the coldest.

Following Cayambe, we will head to Cotopaxi, which is the second tallest mountain in Ecuador. In order to get here, we will head through the Avenue of the Volcanoes, which offers some of the most stunning views of Ecuador’s iconic mountain ranges.

The climb itself is not very technically challenging, but physically quite tiring. The volcano is considered the most beautiful in the whole country, however, so well worth the effort to climb it.

Chimborazo, which is the tallest mountain in Ecuador, will be our final target. Its main summit has the distinction of being the farthest point from the center of the Earth, which makes it the tallest mountain in the world in its own way.

While more difficult than the other two volcanoes, it is not overly technical either and presents incredible views out into the Avenue of Volcanoes as well as the rest of the Ecuadorian countryside.

In order to join the trip, you should have some basic mountaineering experience under your belt and be in good physical condition.

We recommend checking out our 3-day6-day and 8-day mountaineering courses in Washington state and Alaska if you don’t have any previous experience.

So what are you waiting for? Book now for this once in a lifetime experience climbing the three tallest volcanoes in Ecuador!

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Arrive in Quito and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Quito

We will spend the day touring Quito and seeing some of the city’s top spots, including the Old City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 3 to 4: Acclimitization

Due to the high altitude of our final destinations, we will spend two days getting used to climbing in the altitude. On the first day, we will ascend Rucu Pinchincha to 4.698 meters above sea level. The following day, we will hike to Parcacocha Lake at 3.733 meters in elevation.

Day 5 to 6: Cayambe preparation

We will hike from Termas de Papallacta to the Cayambe base camp, gaining 831 meters of elevation on the first day. The following day, we will do some glacier training nearby.

Day 7 to 8: Cayambe approach and summit

We will hike up to the Cayambe hut and prepare for the climb the next day. The following day, we wake up early, at about midnight, and climb to the top of the volcano. Afterwards, we hike back down to Hacienda Pinsaqui.

Day 9: Rest day

We will spend the day exploring Nacienda Pinsaqui and several nearby attractions.

Day 10 to 11: Cotopaxi approach and summit

From Hacienda Pinsaqui, we head to the Tambopaxi lodge, hiking up 1.166 meters before arriving and resting for the summit the following day. On summit day, we wake up early and begin our climb at 1 am. After summiting, we will head back down to the Tambopaxi lodge.

Day 12: Riobamba

We will drive from the Tambopaxi lodge to Riobamba, near Chimborazo. Along the way, we will get great views and the opportunity to rest for the third volcano.

Day 13 to 14: Chimborazo approach and summit

We will head from our hostel to the Stubel Camp on Chimborazo, gaining 2.300 meters of elevation over the course of the first day. On summit day, we get an early start and head to the summit. The climb takes the whole day and afterwards we will return to Riobamba to spend the night.

Day 15: Back to Quito

We will head to Quito after breakfast, driving back through the avenue of the volcanoes for the last time. In Quito, we will have our farewell dinner.

Day 16: Departure

Transfer to the airport and return home.

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.

Hello! I have been thoroughly impressed by the service and assistance that explore-share have provided the past couple years in helping to plan my trip to the High Tatras in Poland. I really appreciated the flexibility that they provided in allowing me to rearrange my trip twice owing to covid. They were responsive and communicative throughout. This trip was part of my Stag weekend celebrations and explore-share connected me with an outstanding guide in the form of Marcel - he was an excellent recommendation and we really enjoyed our guided hike in the High Tatras with him. Marcel was an outstanding professional, placed a high focus on preparing well and staying safe, and was also a great guy! Highly recommend. Many thanks and best wishes - Richard
