The Grossvenediger (3666 m) is Austria‘s third highest peak, also referred to as the “World-old Majesty”. Its summit lies in the border of the states of Salzburg and Tyrol. It is also one the most imposing glacier summits of the Eastern Alps.
The south route ascent which I propose to you here is beautiful and rewarding. To embark on this climbing adventure, you need to have experience in long hiking tours, but it’s not necessary to have glacier experience.
I present to you the following 2-day program.
We meet at Hinterbichl, from where we take a taxi up to the Johannishütte. Then it’s a 3 h walk to the refuge where we will spend the night, the Defreggerhaus.
We leave the refuge at 6AM to start ascending the summit. We will cross the stunning glacier, that has various crevasses topping out on the beautiful summit ridge. Finally we go back down and the trip comes to an end.
Does climbing the Grossvenediger from the south route sound interesting? Then please contact me and let’s start this adventure together!
