The Marangu route is commonly known as the “Coca-Cola” route, since you can buy a Coke in every hut. This route for climbing Kilimanjaro is the one that was first established.

It is often described as one of the easiest walking routes. However,  it has the lowest success rate according to Kinapa (42%). This is because a lot of climbers attempt this route in 5 days, not taking enough time and filing due to bad acclimatisation.

The Marangu route approaches Mt Kilimanjaro from the southeast, using the same route for the ascent and descent. This means that the Marangu is somehow less scenic compared to other routes.

If you prefer not to camp, then this is the route for you, as you can sleeps in dormitory-type huts. These huts also have a dining room, washrooms and flushable toilets (only in the lower parts of the route, then they become “long drop”). Sleeping in the huts has its advantages, but bear in mind that you will share the dormitory with many other climbers, which can mean trying to sleep with snorers.

You will find here below the day-to-day program and the itinerary of the Marangu route.
