Description

Mount Triglav (2864m) is the highest mountain in Slovenia and, as such, deserves its own program. It’s a very popular place in my country. This is a mountain that you have to climb at least once in your life. I’m here to help you do it!

My group tours are a great opportunity for single climbers or for climbers who are part of a small group. These group outings run on Sundays/Mondays and Wednesdays/Thursdays from June 20th till the end of September (if you can’t leave on these dates, you can hire me for a private ascent).

I am an IFMGA mountain guide, which gives you additional safety. Unfortunately, you should know some agencies in Slovenia work with unlicensed guides. They are usually students and have no guiding experience at all.

As part of these groups, you’ll climb Triglav via Krma Valley, the easiest way to the summit. There are around 2000m of ascent and descent, which should take us around 12-18 hours over two days. Be prepared to start the adventure at 7AM on the first day and finish at 4PM on the second day. Of course the time of departure and return is not fixed (it may vary depending on the weather conditions) but it will stay around this schedule.

Krma Valley – 2 days

We start and finish the trek in Krma valley. We will sleep in Triglavski dom, from where we climb to the top. From there, we can descend via Planika hut, making a small circle.

Day 1: 5-7 h walking and 1500 m of altitude change. Day 2: 3-5 h from the hut (Triglavski dom) to the top and return, plus 4 h down to the valley.

There is via ferrata (path equipped with wires and pitons) just from the hut to the top and return.

You may also be interested in a private climbing tour in Triglav. In that case, I can offer you these climbing options.

And you can climb Triglav in winter as well. However, the only good option is to do it from Krma valley. You’ll find all the details on my special program of winter climbing in Mount Triglav.

If you have an interest in climbing this beautiful mountain, please get in touch with me. We will take the time to discuss the itinerary and the program!

If you look for accommodation for the day before or after the ascent, I suggest you go to Hotel Kotnik.

Can I join a group?

From mid-June till the end of September, you can join a group to climb Mt Triglav two times per week, on Sundays/Mondays and Wednesdays/Thursdays. The ascent for the group tours is via the Krma Valley and lasts 2 days.

How much does it cost to climb Mt Triglav with a guide and what does it include?

The price to climb Triglav with a guide will vary depending on whether you join a group (275€ pp) or decide on a private guiding option (with a maximum of 4 participants). You can find the prices detailed in the price section.

Generally, joining a group is a great option for solo travelers and small groups of two or three people, as it is cheaper, and you get to share the adventure with other climbers. Private options are great if you would like a more personalized experience or if you are already traveling in your own group. Winter climbs can only be privately guided.

The price to climb Mt Triglav includes the guiding service, the via ferrata equipment (harness and helmet), and the transportation from/to Bled or nearby before and after the climb. It doesn't include the ½ board in the hut, which costs around 70€ per person. Then, you may want to buy (Sheets cost €5, beer is €4,5, 1,5 liters of water is €4,4, 0,5 liters of water is €2,3). Don't forget to take cash with you.

How long does it take to climb Mt Triglav?

The standard ascent (from the Krma Valley) lasts 2 days. On day 1, you’ll hike between 5 to 7 hours. The altitude gain is 1500 meters. On day 2, you’ll hike between 3 to 5 hours from the hut (Triglavski dom) to the top and back. Then, you’ll hike around 4 hours from the hut to the start of the hike in the valley.

The ascent starts around 8 am on the first day and finishes at around 4 pm on the second day.

What is the meeting point and time?

I'll pick you up at your place in the morning of the first day. I will let you know about the exact pick-up timing a day or two before we go, as it will depend on the weather conditions.

Can you recommend a place to stay close to the Triglav National Park?

I recommend you to stay in one of these villages before your Triglav climb: Bled, Kranjska Gora or Mojstrana.

Here are some suggestions of places to stay in:

In Bled:

  • Garni Hotel Berc
  • Old Bled House
  • Old Parish House

In Kranjska Gora:

  • Kotnik hotel
  • Spik hotel
  • Julijana Guest House Martin

In Mojstrana:

  • Hostel Lukna

I'll pick you up in the morning and drive you back after the climb.

I have food allergies, will this be an issue? What kind of food is being served in the hut?

We can get diet food at the mountain hut where we'll stay. Dinner is typically spaghetti with meat or a stew made with barley, cabbage, or lentils. They serve eggs, bread, marmalade, and honey for breakfast.

How many people do you have in your weekly group climbs?

We have maximum 8 people with one guide on the first day (hiking from the valley to the hut), and maximum 4 people on the second day (from the hut to the summit & back).

Can we store our luggage somewhere safe?

Your luggage can stay in our car. We can't take responsibility for it, but over the past 14 years we never had any issues with guests leaving it in the cars. You can also check with your accommodation if this can be arranged with them directly.

Can children climb Mt Triglav?

My kids climbed Triglav before they turned 7 years old. Scaling almost 2000 vertical meters, this adventure requires children to be used to hiking. It is especially rewarding when the desire to conquer Triglav comes from the kids themselves, rather than being solely their parents' wish. Such genuine enthusiasm makes the ascent much smoother and enjoyable for everyone involved.

At the summit, the via ferrata poses little challenge for children, provided they do not suffer from a fear of heights. In fact, they often relish the experience even more than adults, as it involves an exhilarating form of climbing. The via ferrata itself is technically straightforward, so prior experience is not a prerequisite for completing it

What experience and how fit do I need to be to climb Mt Triglav?

The Mount Triglav climb is considered an intermediate-level ascent. It’s not very technical, but it has some areas in the last stretch that require the use of a rope. It’s important that you have a good physical condition and no fear of heights. You should also be able to walk up to 6 hours straight.

What are some recommended accommodations near our adventure location?

We understand that finding the perfect place to stay is an essential part of your adventure experience. To help you with this, we’ve curated a list of three highly recommended hotels that offer comfort, convenience, and a touch of local charm. These accommodations are well-suited for adventurers looking to relax and rejuvenate after an exciting day of exploration

Mountain Guide

I am a UIAGM mountain guide, ski instructor and sports teacher and the current president of the Slovenian Mountain Guide Association.

I am still the only guide who can make a living working exclusively in Slovenia. I climb Triglav more than 25 times per year, which means I have climbed the most famous peak in my country over 200 times.

If you want to climb or ski in Slovenian mountains I am the right choice. I guide via ferrata, rock climbing, snow climbing, ice climbing, hikes, heliski, freeride skiing and ski touring.

Slovenia has good options for all of these activities, so you are welcome to take a look at my trips and find something for yourself. If you don't find anything let me know and I will see if I can help you!

I speak English. Ich sprache auch ein bischen Deutsch. Parla anche un pocho Italiano e abla tambien un po Espanol.

If I am not available to guide you, one of the super experienced guides in my team - Rok, Peter, Grega or Igor - will be your guide.

My main guide Rok and his helper guide Cveto were outstanding. Both were very attentive to personal and group needs. Safety is obviously a major factor in their guiding. I would recommend them and Explore-Share for any experience they offer.

Climbing with Mitja was such a great experience! There was still some snow on the mountain and there had been strong thunderstorms the day before we left, however Mitja was very reassuring and kept in regular contact leading up to the trip re details and weather forecast. We felt 100% safe trekking with him, and had the most amazing time!
