Description

The Vignemale or Viñamala Peak (known as Comachibosa in Aragonese language) is located in The Pyrenees, in the Province of Huesca. It is shared by Spain and France. On the Spanish side, The Vignemale is part of the Ordesa and Monte Perdido National Park, while on its French face is located within The Pyrenees National Park.

The Vignemale is the highest peak of French Pyrenees and of the massif it belongs to. Almost all the routes lead us to the top of the glacier Ossoue. We can approach it through any of its slopes. From the South and the North the massif has a strong altitude change. From the Northeast the altitude change is less deep and easier. We can ascent from Ossoue dam until we are under the glacier. It is bordered on cracks, slopes and ice plain.

Up the valley of Gaube we will  find the great stone wall of 800 meters. We can dodge it if we pass by its left to the other side and then, climb around the glacier. The direct route leads to the glacier Petit Vignemale (Oulettes) and from there, to the corridor Gaube. In the end, to reach the glacier, the broker closes in a vertical ice wall.

Ascent:

We will meet in a place previously arranged with you. The Vignemale is charactirez by being a mountain with an important altitude change. It is also one of the few Pyrenees peaks with a glacier. It will be a varied ascent of 1 day or more if you want. We will walk and climb across eroded rocks, limestone blocks, moraine, ice and cracks.

During this climb you must use crampons, piolet and ropes. If you choose sleeping in the Baysselance hut at 2.651 meters, the altitude change will be 650 meters. You should consider all the options depending on your physical training.

Technical and Physical level:

The ascent to Gran Vignemale is a very interesting route with a high mountain progression and environment. You can do it in a full day or may take some extra days and sleeping in the Baysselance hut. That makes the trip affordable to almost everyone.

I recommend to do the climbing activity in one and a half day. If you decide to do it in only one day you have to take into account it will require a good physical preparation and the habit of moving in high mountain terrains.
