In this 8 days trekking program we will cover most of the iconic sites of Cordillera Blanca, doing day trekkings and driving in a 4WD car from one spot to another, staying in between in beautiful local towns, enjoying the comfort of nice accomodations.
We will start the traverse in Chavín de Huantar, in the east side of the range, and end in Llanganuca lakes, in the west side.
Cordillera Blanca is the highest tropical mountain range in the world. In its two clearly defined vallleys, Huaylas and Conchucos, you can enjoy glaciers, breathtaking peaks and beautiful high altitude lagoons. With a good acclimatization you can trek up and discover a beautiful nature scenery.
Travelling comfortably, we will visit historical towns and spots, Andean refuges, colonial churches and missions, and appreciate different kind of beautiful landscapes that you won’t easily forget.
Day 1: Lima – Huaraz (3090 m)
Transfer from Lima to Huara, following the deserted north coast until Conococha pass (4100m), where if the weather is good we can see Huayhuash range. Arrival to Marcará, Huaraz, and nightat hotel. 5 hour drive.
Day 2: Acclimatization trek to Cordillera Negra
Drive to Purhuay town, at 3100m. Trek up to Cordillera Negra viewpoint, from where we can see Huascarán, the highest peak in Perú with 6768m, and the summits of Hualcán, Copa and Huay. We go down through an alternative trail to Purhuay, and drive back to the hotel. 5 hour trek.
Day 3: Marcará 2750 m –Huaraz 3090m – Chavín (3140 m)
We drive south, passing by the towns of Recuay and Catac, Querococha lake at 3980m, and Kawish tunnel at 4500m, before arriving to Chavin de Huantar. We’ll visit the ruins of this pre-Columbian civilization of more than 3 thousand years that are a UNESCO World Heritage site. We then go to the hotel, and visit Chavín museum. 5 hour drive.
Day 4: Chavín (3140 m) – Laguna Purhuaycocha 3500 m – Huachucocha 4100m
We drive to San Marcos and Pomachaca, passing through Huari and Acopalca towns until Purhuaycocha lagoon, where we do a short hike on its shore at 3500m. We then drive north to Huachucocha pass, from where we see the splendor of Cordillera Blanca. We stay at night at an Andean chalet. 5 hour drive.
Day 5: Huachucocha 4100m – San Luis (3130 m) – Chacas 33600 m
With the mountain range as a background we drive to San Luis, where we’ll visit Pomallucay sanctuary, before continuing the trip to Chacas, to stay in a cosy accommodation and visit it’s church, mission, and other highlights in the town.
Day 6: Chacas 3360 m – Pupash 4050 m – Refugio Contrahierbas 4100 m
Panoramic stage. We drive through a secondary road up to Pupash pass, from where we can see moountains Chacraraju, Pucahhirca, Taulliraju and Alpamayo, all of them of over 6000m, if the weather is good. This is one of the few spots from where Alpamayo can be seen. We park the car and take a hiking track to Contrahierbas refuge, where we’ll stay.
Day 7: Refugio Contrahierbas 4100m – Yanama (3360 m)-Marcará2750 m
Quiet descent through the trail to Yanama town, from where we go up to Portachuelo de Llanganuca, at 4767m, to enjoy breathtaking views of Mt. Huascarán, Huandoy and Pisco. We go back to Huaylas valley through Yungay, and stay at the hotel at Marcará. Farewell dinner.
Day 8: Marcará – Huaraz – Lima
Bus back to Lima. End of trip.
