Hiking the Kepler Track, 4 days in the Fiordland National Park

Highlights

* Experience the best of this remote alpine destination in New Zealand

* Take in stunning views of the fiords that were forged centuries ago by glaciers

* Immerse yourself in unadulterated nature and face the elements

Description

Explore one of Fiordland’s most challenging and rewarding hikes on the South Island of New Zealand. The Kepler Track is a 60 km route that winds along lakes, through forestry and up into Alpine terrain.

The trek itself takes four days. You’ll walk for up to eight hours per day in, at times, uneven terrain. Fiordland sits in the Southwest corner of New Zealand which means it’s quite exposed to the elements. Add altitude to that and you get sometimes challenging weather conditions. Be prepared for rain and wind and a challenging hike. Luckily, your guide will be one hand to make sure that you’re never hiking in unsafe conditions.

Along the way, you’ll take rests in typical New Zealand alpine shelters. Then, in the night you’ll sleep in alpine huts to regain strength for the next day of walking.

The stunning remote nature that you encounter along the way will make all the hard work worth it. You’ll leave Fiordland with lasting memories.

Are you up for the challenge? Book now and get ready to be blown away by the stunning scenery that awaits you.

While you’re in the Fiordland National Park region, you should take advantage of this awesome half-day kayaking adventure in the Milford Sound.

Itinerary

Day 1: Te Anau to Luxmore Hut

We’ll start out at Te Anau as we hike through forestland to Brod Bay Campsite. Here we’ll start to ascend. After a few hours, we’ll arrive at Luxmore Hut where we’ll spend the night.

Day 2: Luxmore Hut to Iris Burn Hut

On the second day, we’ll trek up Mount Luxmore along the ridgeline for around 5 to 6 hours. The tricky thing about this day is your exposure to the elements. We’ll stop at Forest Burn shelter for a bit of lunch and a rest. We’ll then keep going to Hanging Valley Shelter where we’ll be able to take in exceptional views of the fiords. Then we’ll descend and zig-zag into the bush. After a few more hours, we’ll reach Iris Burn Hut, our home for the night.

Day 3: Iris Burn Hut to Moturau Hut

On this section of the trek we’ll leave the alpine heights and enter into a beautiful gorge. We’ll hike through native Beech and Podocarp forest before reaching Lake Manapouri. Monturau Hut, our accomodation for the night, sits right on the lake, so you’ll get amazing views as you rest.

Day 4: Moturau Hut to Te Anau

Our final day of the trek is the easiest. We’ll trek across wetland before following the Waiau River to Rainbow Reach where we’ll see a cool swing bridge. Here you’ll get the choice to take a shuttle back to Te Anau or continuing walking to the Kepler Track car park and then Te Anau.
