Hut-based ski touring in the Arrowsmith Range, New Zealand (5 days)

Experience an exhilarating skiing adventure in the mountains of

the Arrowsmith Range on the South Island of New Zealand. Running from the southwest to northeast, in parallel to the ranges of the Southern Alps, the Arrowsmith Range stretches 10 kilometers in length.

The range reaches a peak at Mount Arrowsmith, which is measured at 2,781 meters.

The Arrowsmith area offers spectacular high-alpine touring, both on glaciated and non-glaciated terrain. This creates an exciting range of options available for us to follow, depending on different levels of skill and fitness.

Our trip will begin excitingly by hitching a ride on a helicopter to Cameron Hut, which rests underneath the peak of Mount Arrowsmith.

Then for 5 full days we’ll tour among the high alpine area, ascend some of the spectacular summits, and experience some of the best skiing available.

From the Cameron Glacier we’ll ski tour to the Jagged Col and Peg Col. And then from there to South Ashburton Glacier via Speen Stream. Once we reach the peak of the glacier prepare for a spectacular skiing descent of 1,100 meters.

As well as touring hut to hut, we’ll also include some fundamental instructions, which will include uphill skinning technique, avalanche transceiver searches, assessing avalanche terrain, and route selection.

Our exact location on the range will depend on the weather conditions, but there are high numbers of non-technical non-technical ascents that lead to breathtaking downhill runs.
