Join us on an intermediate level trail running tour in Barrocal, in the Algarve region. We will guide you on some of the several 20-kilometer trails in this area, a great way to explore this unique place in Portugal.

Bearing in mind the concept that “Algarve is not just a beach”, we created trail running tours for small groups, where we combine running with the possibility of exploring the region.

The Barrocal Tours include five different trails, taking you through the typical floodplains inside the Algarve and the hills, with an extension of approximately 20 km and an estimated duration between 2 and 4 hours each. You can go on the trail of your choice between the following:

-Moncarapacho Tour. This tour takes you to the Cerro da Cabeça viewpoint, from where you can enjoy a great view over ​​Olhão and its surroundings. When we descend, we will take the access trails to Cerro de São Miguel (411m), the highest peak of the Algarve Sotavento, enjoying amazing views over the sea. Distance: 19km/ Duration: Trail Running 2h– h / Hiking 4h – 7h/ Ascent: 670m

-Tavira Tour (Pego do Inferno Waterfall). We leave Tavira towards the north, runing along the Gilão river and also crossing the Asseca river, until we reach the famous Pego do Inferno Waterfall. Along the route we will cross the water lines many times. Distance: 19km / Duration: Trail Running 2h – 4h / Hiking 4h – 6h /Ascent: 500m.

-Paderne Tour. This itinerary takes you to hike along the trails around the Cerro de São Vicente and the Paderne Castle (Catelo de Paderne). We will cross the Algibre, Alte, Paderne and Quarteira streams, running and hiking along trails that provide plenty of areas for a good rest. Distance: 19km /Duration: Trail Running 2h – 4h / Hiking 4h – 6h /Ascent: 540m.

-Salir Tour (Rocha da Pena). On this tour you will be hiking to the Rocha da Pena plateau. You will discover not only unique flora and fauna, but also  rocky sandstone, dating back to the Iron Age. The itinerary will also take us to visit belvederes and talefe, discovering different panoramic views. Distance: 20km /Duration: Trail Running 2h – 4h / Hiking 4h – 7h /Ascent: 700m

Estoi Tour. From Estoi we head towards the Bemposta and Malhão hills, getting unique views from the village to the ocean. We will cross the Rio Seco river and the National Road 2 when we descend. The trails will take us to the Cerro do Guilhim, where we will enjoy a spectacular 360º view, from the mountains to the sea. Distance: 20km / Duration: Trail Running 2h – 4h / Hiking 4h – 7h / Ascent: 870m

About the Guide


We are a company based in the beautiful Algarve region in Portugal. We are focused on Active Tourism, especially on trail running and hiking tours. Our company is registered in Turismo de Portugal and recognized as a Nature Tourism company by the ICNF–Institute of Nature Conservation and Forestry.

João Mendes is our guide. He started practicing trail running in 2012, as an amateur athlete. Since then he has participated in several regional and national races, covering different distances and developing a special interest for endurance races, where he participates in the national circuit.
