Join JMGA certified mountain guide Tomoki, or one of the guides in his Powder Company team, on this exciting 1 day backcountry skiing adventure in the Niseko area in Hokkaido, Japan.
The Niseko skiing area on the island of Hokkaido is one of, if not the most famous skiing area in the entire country of Japan. Thus making it a must visit for any skiing enthusiast who happens to be visiting this amazing country.
The purpose of this private, backcountry skiing tour, will be to spend the day exploring and enjoying some of the great descents that can be found around the Niseko skiing area. Due to the nature of the trip, we will not be utilising the resort area’s many ski lifts. Instead, we will be hiking to the top of the descents. Thus giving you a chance to admire the beautiful snow covered landscape.
There are also a number of lovely peaks in the Niseko area, peaks which you will not only get to see, but will get to hike up and ski down. They include Mount Nito, Mount Chise, and Mount Iwao.
The trip will begin at approximately 8:00 am. I will come and pick you up, or you can meet up with the small group at our office. From there we will discuss the day’s trip before leaving the office at approximately 9:00 am. After about an hour’s hike, we will reach the first descent that will be between 200 and 300 metres. For the rest of the day, we will hike up and ski down several exciting descents before returning to the office, where you can then enjoy an optional photo session.
The powder and slopes around Niseko are marvellous. And it is my goal to not only show them to you, but to help you enjoy them in a private backcountry skiing tour. If you want to join me, send me a request, and I’ll be happy to guide you.
If you would like to experience a group tour version of this trip, you can also join me here.
Tour cancellation and the final decision of location will be decided on the day pending weather and snow conditions. I will take clients to the area of best condition and least risky for the day. For this reason, I could not be able to comply with specific areas that clients demand.

Our guide office in Niseko.
I am Tomoki Takaku and I´m the founder and head guide at Powder Company Guides. I am a JMGA mountain and ski guide, based in the notorious deep power land of Niseko in Hokkaido, Japan. I am also a professional snowboarder sponsored by The North Face and have been traveling all over the world as an extreme freeride snowboarder. I´ve ridden a lot of big mountains across the globe, including in Mongolia, Siberia and Alaska. I've starred in a few films (like Icon) and TV shows. My expertise also is in new product development for The North Face, and also made my own signature snowboard with GENTEMSTICK under “GT” and “Big Floater”.
In the winter, I am based at the foot of Annupuri ski resort in Niseko. I´m one of the most experienced loca guides: I´ve been guiding here since 1999. I also enjoy teaching the basics of how to ride powder and to communicate the dangers in the backcountry.
In the summer, I enjoy guiding Stand Up Paddle “SUP” in the rivers and oceans near Niseko.
I have 50hrs of Wilderness First Aid qualification as well as CAA qualified.
In case I am unavailable to guide, my colleagues with Niseko Winter Guide qualification and a member of Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Personnel in my guide company will be able to guide you.
If I´m not available to guide you personally, one of the certified guides in my team will take good care of you. We promise once you get a taste of the powder in Niseko, there is no going back!

It was a pleasure with the guides from the pow company. Matoko likes hiking so we did 3 days of backcountry. I think we will be going back to Japan!

We had a very nice time with our guids matoko and shino. We did not do the side country skiing at all but instead went completely into the back country for 3 days of amazing powder. I would definitely contact the powdercompany about guiding if I find myself in Japan again.
I went with two guide colleagues of Tomoki, Aki Kobayashi and Makoto Yamada, and they were awesome! I wish I could have done more trips with the guys! The two guided trips were awesome! The visibility was not clear for Mt Yotei and we ended up going to a different mountain. The guides on both trips were knowledge and fun guys to be in the backcountry with. I would highly recommend using Powder Guide in the future. Great memories and great times! Thank you so much for helping to organize the trips, much appreciated :)
