The area of the Frey refuge (1700 m) is located in Cerro Catedral, some 20 km from the center of the city of SC de Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina.
To access it, we go to the base of Catedral ski center. Then from there we follow the path trail that leads to the refuge in the valley head of Toncek lagoon. The path takes about 3 hours on average along it until the refuge (distance: 10 km, altitude: 700 m).
Frey is an excellent rock climbing area, of routes of classic multi-pitch, sport routes and boulder. Rock is an orange granite of excellent quality, which has very good cracks, slabs and some wind forms. There is a variety of options for climbing, and all difficulty levels to enjoy the rock and a unique landscape.
In particular, the highest peak of the massif is the “Main Tower”, 2405 m high above the sea, having walls between 150 and 300 m of altitude. Being normal route to the Tower, a well accessible difficulty, with only a short stretch of 6th grade.
I propose here a program for people who are coming to Frey for the first time. The climbing difficulty is for beginners/intermediates. It’s ideal if you want to know the place, the rock and the environment, following a logical progression and making good climbs.
Does this trip sound interesting? Then please contact me, I’ll be waiting for your message! And another great trip that we can take in the area is rock climbing in Cerro Lopez.
