The area of the Frey refuge (1700 m) is located in Cerro Catedral, some 20 km from the center of the city of SC de Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina.

To access it, we go to the base of Catedral ski center. Then from there we follow the path trail that leads to the refuge in the valley head of Toncek lagoon. The path takes about 3 hours on average along it until the refuge (distance: 10 km, altitude: 700 m).

Frey is an excellent rock climbing area, of routes of classic multi-pitch, sport routes and boulder. Rock is an orange granite of excellent quality, which has very good cracks, slabs and some wind forms. There is a variety of options for climbing, and all difficulty levels to enjoy the rock and a unique landscape.

In particular, the highest peak of the massif is the “Main Tower”, 2405 m high above the sea, having walls between 150 and 300 m of altitude. Being normal route to the Tower, a well accessible difficulty, with only a short stretch of 6th grade.

I propose here a program for people who are coming to Frey for the first time. The climbing difficulty is for beginners/intermediates. It’s ideal if you want to know the place, the rock and the environment, following a logical progression and making good climbs.

Does this trip sound interesting? Then please contact me, I’ll be waiting for your message! And another great trip that we can take in the area is rock climbing in Cerro Lopez.

Day 1

Frey refuge

We leave from Bariloche in the morning. The trip to the base of Cerro Catedral is about 15 minutes. From there, we prepare the equipment in backpacks and begin the hike to reach the Frey refuge. This will take around 3 hours.

Then, we have lunch near the refuge, and prepare our equipment for climbing.

After that, we head to our first rock climbing spots!

Day 2

Main Tower

We have an early breakfast. Then, we get ready to start walking towards the base of the Main Tower.

The approach to the Tower is a very good hike and ascent because we gain about 400 m of altitude. The beautiful view is very wide in all directions once we reach the edge of the mountain, as Cerro Catedral is one of the highest and most important in the area, only second to the greatness of Cerro Tronador.

Climbing the Normal route takes about 10 hours roundtrip from the refuge without rushing, enjoying the scenery and climbing.

The route runs along the north side of the tower, so the sun heats the rock during the entire climb. The average difficulty of the route is 5 grade with a step of 6th in the final meters. The length of the climb is 150 m in 4/5 pitches long.

In addition to the Main Tower, there are many other great climbing places to go in Frey. We’ll choose which ones to go according to your level.

Day 3

Frey or Abuelo Needle

After breakfast we prepare for a climb more before heading back to Bariloche. The options are Frey or El Abuelo needles, both very close to the refuge. They have climbing possibilities for routes 100/120 m and 5/5 + grade difficulty.
After going back to the refuge, we prepare backpacks and equipment to descend the path back to the base of Cerro Catedral and Bariloche.
