The Himalayan valley of Gulmarg in Kashmir (India) in February, the dream ski trip for every powder skiing enthusiast !
Nesting amongst a string of summits above 8000m that tower above the horizon, Gulmarg at 2690m is the highest and best equipped ski resort of continental Asia, with a number of well maintained ski lifts and a cable car taking you up to 3950m.
This small tourist resort which name means “flowered meadow” was for a long time the summer retreat of choice of the British expats and Indian ruling families. It has remained very popular for its cool temperatures during the dry season. But most recently, Gulmarg has also developed as a ski resort, on the plateau area on Mt Apharwat which peaks at 4200m.
Thanks to its impressive snowfall during the winter season, Gulmarg’s powder is not only abundant but also exquisitely light and fluffy.
The off-piste and ski touring possibilities are vast and varied : wide slopes, ridges, couloirs, forests… but the length of the runs is always impressive, with elevation differentials of over 1000m on slopes going from average to steep.
This is why Gulmarg is a dream destination for powder hounds and all those looking for exciting runs in a grandiose landscape, with the added exotic charm of these remote himalayan valleys.
Please get in touch with me if you think about going there. It will be my pleasure to guide you there and let you discover the magic of skiing in Kashmir.
