Enjoy a captivating day hike along the Whakarewarewa Circuit in the Redwoods surrounding Rotorua! This guided program takes you into the heart of the Whakarewarewa Forest of New Zealand’s North Island and gives you a front row view of its remarkable forests and trails that are a symbol of the country’s pristine nature!

Located roughly 225 kilometers to the southeast of Auckland, Rotorua serves as a gateway into one of New Zealand’s most fascinating territories: the Whakarewarewa Forest. Known for its vast sprawl of nature trails and tracks, it is a popular destination for hikers and adventurers not just in New Zealand, but across the world.

The forest itself encompasses 5,600 hectares of land, a healthy amalgamation of forestry and service roads as well as single-track trails, and unencumbered views of a beautiful wilderness. The pride and joy for hikers in this area is the Whakarewarewa Circuit, a 34-kilometer trail that includes panoramas of Rotorua as well as lakeside treks past both Tikitapu and Rotokakahi.

You will begin the day early from Rotorua, starting the circuit southeast of the city at the parking area of Lone Mile Road. From there, the 34 kilometer route opens before you, taking you past some of the best sites in the forest. Over the course of a full day, you will enjoy a hearty trek along trails surrounded by the New Zealand bush, most notably the California Redwoods that tower into the sky.

Our guides have a deep knowledge and passion for the region, so you will learn about Lake Tikitapu and Lake Rotokakahi as you stroll by their shores. We will fill you in on the compelling history of the area as well, which has played a vital role in community and culture for centuries. Our experience will ensure you have a safe hike without compromising the wonder and fun of the circuit.

Other profound plant life includes eucalyptus, Douglas Fir, and walnut trees, and the lush native flora that symbolizes the country’s environment. The trail reaches nearly 1,700 feet, so elevated vantage points will leave you breathless as you look out over Rotorua and the surrounding Whakarewarewa Forest.

This is a serious undertaking, especially for a day hike. While signage is clear and the trail is well-marked, you should have an intermediate fitness level to get the most of this trek. Hikers should also be prepared to take on 34 kilometers of trail to see all of the incredible features the course has to offer.

Book this phenomenal day hike through the Redwoods of Rotorua NOW and conquer the Whakarewarewa Circuit in the North Island’s most notorious scenery and see an unforgettable landscape of New Zealand!

If you wanted to switch gears and bring a bike, we can enjoy a mountain biking program in the Redwoods of Rotorua in the vast Whakarewarewa Forest!
