FAQs: Colombia

What should I know about Colombia?

Situated in the northwestern portion of South America, Colombia is an incredibly diverse country full of numerous different landscapes and cultures. The type of outdoor activity you want to do will largely dictate where in the country you will end up going.

For mountaineering enthusiasts, the Andean region, which stretches throughout the center of the country, is a prime target. Boasting three separate subranges – the Cordillera Occidental, Central and Oriental – there are a plethora of excellent climbing options. Among the most popular is Nevado del Tolima (5,230 meters) and Santa Isabel (4,950).

Closer to cities such as Medellin, Bogota and Cali – the highlands – rock climbing is another popular pursuit. Suesca, near Bogota, and Guatapé, near Medellin, are two particularly popular options. Both offer some great views as well as a range of different climbing options, from trad to bouldering and sport.

Finally, trekking is one of the most popular outdoor adventure activities around in Colombia. Juntas-Salento Trek through Los Nevados National Park and the Camino Real in Chicamocha Canyon are among the most popular, but there are also plenty of others.

This was absolutely phenomenal. Hernan not only brought me to some incredibly beautiful climbs, but he taught me so much. We got so many routes in, and it was one of the best experiences of my life getting to climb in Colombia. Suesca is absolutely beautiful, and anyone looking to climb here must go with Hernan. I cannot reccomend him enough.

We did the Nevado Santa Isabel trip in Los Nevados (not listed specifically on exploreshare, but we asked if we could do it). It was really spectacular and the service was great.
