France is the largest country in Western Europe. Incredibly diverse, a trip to the country allows many possible itineraries. The glaciated peaks of the French Alps are the perfect scenery for all types of mountain activities, while visiting the wine regions of Champagne and Bordeaux makes for a singular experience. To the south, the French Riviera allures travelers with sun-drenched beaches and the island of Corsica, tucked in the Mediterranean Sea, provides endless options for hikers and explorers alike, including the most challenging hiking route in Europe: the GR20. When it comes to cities, the big favorite is always Paris: a major tourist destination featuring some of the world’s most iconic historical sites, museums, architecture and cuisine.

Good to Know

What’s the weather like?

Weather varies greatly between regions: the northern cities and mountain towns have very cold winters (with heavy snowfalls on the mountains) and warm summers; while the coastal cities by the Mediterranean enjoy mild temperatures almost all year and very hot days during the summer season.

Getting there

Most of the world’s major airlines have direct flights to Paris. Other important regional airports include Lyon, Nice, Marseille and Toulouse. France is well-connected to many European cities by train, bus or ferry. If you are traveling to the French Alps, the closest airports are Geneva (in Switzerland, near the French border), Grenoble and Chámbery. To explore the French Riviera, the best gateway is Nice.

Best time to visit:

France can be visited all-year-round. During spring (April-June) and fall (September-November) you’ll find less tourists, lower prices and mild temperatures. Summer (especially July) is very crowded. The ski season in the French Alps runs from December to April.

I want to post my review on Peaks Hunter Mountain Guides ( see below).I climbed Mont Blanc in September 2019 with Peak Hunter Mountain Guides. The service I received was excellent. They provided me with all the information I requested and more. Scheduling was clear and everything went as it was planned. My guide, Luigi Gagliardi, is a highly skilled professional. He did a great job taking me to the summit, providing me with all instructions and taking a great care of me. I learnt a lot from him. He is also a great person.

We had an amazing trip, we wanted to explore the Mercantour region, reconnect with nature, and spend quality time as a couple. Fabrice understood the brief, was clear in his guidelines to prepare the trip, proposed different options, and, ultimately, adapted the hikes on a day to day basis based on the weather. For example, instead of having us hike all day in the mountains in pouring rain on the first day, he adapted the program and took us for a hike all around Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat along the riviera coast. The hikes were stunning, especially at this time of the year (fall) with amazing lights and colors. We highly recommend Fabrice as a guide, he is very knowledgeable on the fauna&flora, local history, on wolves. He also initiated us to some key principles of Nordic walking and mindful walking. Thanks Explore & Share team for connecting us. We definitely will do it again and recommend to friends.
