FAQs: United Kingdom

What should I know about United Kingdom?

Composed of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom is a small but diverse place and full of plenty of action for all kinds of outdoor adventurers.

Hiking (hill walking as it is known in the UK) is the most popular activity and can be done just about anywhere. There are thousands of kilometers of trails all across the UK from trails to the summit of aforementioned peaks to one that takes you all the way across England from east to west.

Aside from hiking, rock climbing is also popular. While rock climbing can be done across Great Britain (UK minus Northern Ireland), Scotland is the most popular spot. Many opt to head to the Isle of Skye and climb the munros on the famed ridge that runs across the island.

Via ferrata in England’s Peak District and various water sports in the Lake District are also popular summertime attractions.

In the winter, many mountaineers head to Ben Nevis to take on the peak. It is one of the few points in the UK that consistently has snow in the winter and due to the harsh conditions is considered ideal practice for mountaineering in the Alps.

Why should I choose United Kingdom for my adventure?

Stunning scenery

In spite of its small size, the United Kingdom offers plenty of incredible scenery. From the white cliffs of Dover in the south of England to the summit of Ben Nevis in Scotland and Forest of Dean in Wales, there is plenty of incredible scenery to witness and terrains to explore across the UK.

Something for everyone

Whether you are an experienced explorer looking for a challenge or out for a family holiday, the UK has something for everyone. Via ferratas in the Peak and Lake Districts of England allow anyone to be a rock climber for a day and make a daring ascent. Climbing Ben Nevis in the winter is a worthwhile challenge for any mountaineer.

Three Peaks Challenge

The challenge, which is usually used to raise money for charity, is to climb the highest mountain in England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours. Participants usually start with Ben Nevis (1,345 meters/4,413 feet), followed by Scafell Peak (978 meters/3,209 feet) and then Snowdon (1,085 meters/3,560 feet). The hiking is challenging, the scenery is fantastic and the day is action-packed.

What can I expect from the weather in United Kingdom?

The UK has a temperate climate in spite of its northern latitude. This generally means that the country experiences cool and wet winters and warm and wet summers. Average temperatures tend to sit around 5 ºC (41 ºF) or more in the winter and reach 15 ºC (59 ºF) or more in the summer.

How can I get to United Kingdom?

This generally depends on where you are heading in the country. Trips to England’s Lake and Peak districts (where most outdoor activities take place) generally begin with a flight into Manchester Airport (MAN). Trips to Scotland generally begin with a flight into Glasgow Airport (GLA). And trips to Wales generally begin with a flight into either Cardiff Airport (CFL) or Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL). From any of these airports, it is easiest to rent a car and drive to your final destination.

What people are saying about United Kingdom trips

Our mission was to hike up Ben Nevis but not along the main footpath. We hoped for something a bit more challenging. ..and we got it. Uncertain of what we’d be facing, Scott expertly assessed our ability during the first part of the hike and enthusiastically confirmed that we could handle the trip up the back. Knowledgeable about about the area, geology and flora, Scott was an excellent guide and fun to spend the day with. He offered us tips for managing the terrain and kept the pace that would give us the adventure we were looking for. We came away feeling that the investment in a guide was well worth it. We would not have tackled that route without his guidance. Recommended without reservation! Thanks Scott

Scott is a great guide with excellent communication skills, local knowledge and technical expertise. The trip up the Ben was fantastic and throughout the whole experience Scott was always on hand to help or give assistance when needed as well as taking the time to teach me some new skills along the way. Thanks very much

What a fantastic trip ! This was my first time to use crampons and scrabbling. The pre walk information and communication was 10/10 Scott and Malcolm were extremely professional with a great knowledge of the mountain. I felt safe yet appropriately challenged throughout which made for an unforgettable day. The company was top class too. I could not recommend climbing Ben Nevis with Kirkhope mountaineering highly enough ! Thanks so much Paula
