1+ day Ski touring in Les Combes des Aravis

Join me for one or more days of ski touring in Les Combes des Aravis, in the beautiful Haute-Savoie. 

The Aravis massif is located halfway between Annecy and Chamonix. The Combes des Aravis, north of La Clusaz, are famous among ski tourers for many reasons. They are easy to access, quite short and technical. Moreover, they remain snowy late in the season and they often offer great snow because the sun doesn’t hit before mid February. And there are many possible itineraries, varied in terms of orientation and difficulty.

The terrain consists of a series of combes connected by passes and couloirs with different steepness. Therefore, it is possible to design many itineraries depending on your wishes, your skiing level and the conditions.

Paccaly is one of my favourites, and probably the most traveled route of the Aravis together with Grand Crêt. The difficulty of the Combe de Paccaly is PD, and the altitude change is of about 1000 meters. This route includes a not too difficult ascent until the Passage du Père, near the Tête de Paccaly. Then the descent is spectacular, with an inclination of almost 25° and 800 meters of altitude change.

There is another option in the Paccaly route that I enjoy a lot, where we follow the ridge to the southwest and then we ascend with crampons until the Trou de la Mouche. Then we traverse the Trou de la Mouche and descend by the Combe du Grand-Crê.
