Ice climbing is one of Abisko’s signature winter adventures, and for good reason—this area offers some of the best icefalls in Sweden, suitable for both beginners and seasoned climbers. The variety of routes, combined with stunning views of the Abisko Mountains and Lake Torneträsk, makes climbing here truly unforgettable.

Your experience begins with a short drive to the icefall, where your guide will equip you with the necessary gear and introduce you to the fundamentals of climbing vertical ice, including how to use crampons and ice axes safely and effectively.

  • The experience covers transportation to and from your accommodation in Abisko or Björkliden, as well as all the essential iceclimbing gear, including alpine boots (EU sizes 36–48), crampons, a harness, and a helmet.

Itinerary

Day 1: Ice Climibing in Abisko

The morning tour begins at 9:30, and the afternoon tour starts at 14:00. Each outing lasts roughly three hours. During the afternoon session, spotlights and headlamps are used to light up the ice wall.

Disclaimer

Participants must be at least 10 years old. Children aged 10 to 16 must be accompanied on the tour by a paying guardian, while those between 16 and 18 may join without an adult.


Equipment you will need to bring

Bring mittens or gloves, along with a hat—just make sure it doesn’t have tassels or anything that could interfere when wearing a helmet. Wear warm pants and a jacket, or an overall, and consider carrying a backpack so you can pack an extra sweater in case you get cold while standing by the icefall or remove layers if you get too warm during the climb.
