Mexico is a magical country, with a fascinating culture and history, and an exquisite cuisine. However, it guards many other secrets, amongst them its alpine regions and majestic peaks. Dare to climb the biggest mountain in the country, and the third highest in North America: Pico de Orizaba (5,610 m).
This 3-day expedition increases the summit chances by adding an extra acclimatization day. Although it's possible to reach the summit in 2 days, the chances are much lower than in this 3-day itinerary.
A famous legend here, says there was a brave and enchanting woman, Nahuani. She had a beautiful eagle as her companion: Ahuilizapan, which means Orizaba. When Nahuani died in battle, Ahuilizapan succumbed to pain, flying as high as she could to let herself fall back into earth. The spot she hit, transformed into the majestic volcano. And each time she remembers her friend, the volcano tremors. So locals climb it as a way to pay respect to both, and their friendship.
On this trip, you’ll get the opportunity to pay respect as well, as you stand at the top of Pico de Orizaba. Follow one of our local guides, who will show you the real Mexico, and the best spots here. Once you reach the summit of Pico de Orizaba, you’ll get to see a perfectly shaped crater, which is over 300 meter deep, and about 410 to 480 meters wide. Also, you’ll cross the Jamapa glacier, with dazzling and permanent snow. We’ll begin our ascent at around 12:00 and 2:00 a.m. So, we’ll be reaching the end of a labyrinth or be already at the glacier by sunrise.
Also, please note this is a private trip. Therefore you'll get an expert guide for every 2 people. And we include all the technical gear needed for the ascent. So you won't have to worry about bringing it.
So, let one of the expert guides of our team take you to the summit of Pico de Orizaba. Request to book this trip today and live an unforgettable mountaineering adventure in Mexico. Or check the shorter version of this trip.

More info
Participants must be in a good physical condition and your body acclimatization process must be properly carried out.
Will I need to bring any technical equipment of my own? Is it possible to rent equipment, and if so, what would be the approximate cost of that?
We include all technical gear: crampons, Ice-ax, helmet, harness, hiking poles, front light all food and drink in the mountain, medical insurance for summit day, tents, camping, etc. Really, all you have to bring are your mountaineering clothes, boots and sleeping bag and backpack, and we take care of the rest :) And if you don't have some clothing, you can rent it with us too.
How will accommodation and meals be handled on the mountain?
All food and water on the mountain also included, also vegetarian, or any other special menu.
During the high season, we operate a fixed private base camp exclusively for our guests. This comfortable camp is set up with facilities such as toilets, spacious sleeping tents, and a dining tent where meals are served, offering a more organized and enjoyable mountain experience before the summit push.
During the low season, the fixed camp is dismantled, and accommodation is adapted to current conditions. Depending on the weather, group size, and mountain logistics, we may either set up a temporary camping area or stay in the mountain refuge. The refuge is always open, but please note that it is a basic shelter with no services or amenities.
This flexible approach allows the guide team to choose the safest and most suitable option for each trip while ensuring the best possible experience on Pico de Orizaba.
Are there any other special requirements such as permits/insurance/vaccines that we need to consider before the tour?
For insurance, you can review the options proposed by Explore-Share's partner. More information is available here: https://partner.globalrescue.com/exploreshare/
Can I join a group?
Shared group departures are available for this trip. Group dates are usually added based on demand, especially when climbers specifically request to join others and already have a confirmed booking. This helps create compatible groups of participants with similar goals and timing.
Before the main climbing season, some open group dates may also be published in advance. If so, you'll see them displayed above in this page.
During the season, dates are updated regularly depending on demand, availability, and how many participants have already joined.
If you are interested in joining a group on Pico de Orizaba and you don't see an open group published, feel free to send us your preferred travel dates. We will be happy to let you know about current group options or help match you with other climbers. Also, please note that the shared guide tour will be converted to a private guide tour if the minimum number of participants is not reached.
Which is the meeting point?
Departure is set from Puebla City (about 2 hrs. from Mexico City and half way to Pico de Orizaba) because it's in the middle of the 3 big volcanoes Pico de Oriaba, Iztaccihuatl and La Malinche and many clients want it this way, but if you want us to pick you up from Mexico City, we can provide that too 😊
Will we carry our own backpacks, clothes, tents, and other gear? How many liters do you recommend our backpack be?
We reach base camp by 4x4, so all hikes will be light. No more than 5–10 kg. With a 30–40-liter backpack, you will be fine.
What is the physical requirement for this Orizaba climb?
Participants must be in good physical condition and should have proper acclimatization before the climb. It's important to prepare physically and allow time for altitude acclimatization to ensure a successful and safe ascent.
What are the transportation options to reach the starting point?
These are some common transport options between cities:
Ground transportation is priced per vehicle rather than per person. Standard transport is usually provided in a sedan-type car, which is a comfortable option for small groups.
We generally recommend a maximum of 3 guests per car if traveling with a larger amount of luggage, in order to ensure enough space and comfort during transfers.
For larger groups, or when extra luggage space is needed, larger vehicles such as vans can usually be arranged for an additional cost. We are happy to recommend the best option based on your group size and travel needs.
If you decide to come by bus, we would pick you up at Puebla bus station or at Puebla hotel if you are already in Puebla
Who prepares the meals, and are vegetarian or vegan options available?
Meals are prepared by the camp assistants, who help with logistics such as organizing equipment, setting up camp, and supporting the overall operation. Most food is cooked at the mountain lodge and then transported by 4x4 vehicle to base camp, where the team reheats meals and prepares fresh items such as salads, sandwiches, fruit, coffee, and snacks.
The menu varies regularly to keep meals enjoyable throughout the season and to provide variety for returning climbers and guides.
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary requirements can usually be accommodated with advance notice for your trip on Pico de Orizaba.
How much water should I bring for the summit ascent?
For summit day, we generally recommend carrying around 2 liters of water per person. Additional water is available at base camp, where large 20-liter containers are provided so guests can refill their bottles or hydration systems before the climb.
What bathroom and shower facilities are available?
During the high season, our private base camp includes its own bathroom facilities for guests, providing added comfort on the mountain.
During the low season, these camp facilities are not available. However, on the first day of the standard 3-day program, accommodation at the mountain lodge includes functional amenities such as bathrooms, hot showers, and Wi-Fi.
The lodge offers a rustic and authentic mountain atmosphere that many international travelers especially enjoy, while still providing the essential comforts before heading higher on Pico de Orizaba.

Amazing team and they did a great job accommodating for our needs and sorting out logistics! 10/10 would climb again with 3summits!

Everyone at 3Summits was incredible, from Karla helping out with all of the logistics and coordinating everything, to Ebrardo and Luis the first two faces we saw upon our arrival, to Lupita in the hostile, and especially Pati and Christian who kept us sane, safe, and well fed on the mountain. Unfortunately we did not summit due to altitude sickness but Christian (who makes about 60 trips up the mountain every season) was cool calm and collected throughout and was supportive on the way up and down. Overall I will definitely be making a return trip to attempt the summit again.
