Description

The southern Dominican Republic combines tropical forests with crystal clear rivers and beautiful beaches. This half day tour is your chance to immerse yourself in a wild region and reach the Cueva de la Virgen, a stunning canyon cave in Barahona!

The Cueva de la virgen (Spanish for Cave of the Virgin) is a recently inaugurated trail that crosses a unique tropical environment tucked below the Bahoruco mountain range. It is in La Ciénaga town, within the province of Barahona, 22km from Barahona City and 205km from Santo Domingo.

We will hike through a lush tropical forest with a rich flora and fauna and refreshing streams. The 30-min route ends at a rocky canyon called Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Gorge), which is home to the Cueva de la Virgen, a huge cave surrounded by emerald colored waterfalls and natural pools.

Keep in mind that this is a family-friendly trip. It includes some stream-crossings and short climbs, but your children will love it. Once at Cueva de la Virgen, we can all swim in the cool water! However, we will have to be careful, legend has it that the spirit of La Ciguapa, a woman with long dark hair that can turn visitors into stone, inhabits the cave!

So, are you up for an unforgettable hiking experience in the Dominican Republic? Then contact us! Let’s go to La Ciénaga, Barahona, and go to the impressive Cueva de la Virgen!

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
