Join me on this 4-day extravaganza of hiking, history, culture and nature across northern Chile and I promise you will make memories to last a lifetime, as we traipse and travail from lovely beaches on the coast to the highlands and mountains inland via absolutely amazing fields and valleys, all while indulging in the ancient history, archaeological sites, biodiversity and lovely food and drink of the area.
The northern region of Chile stretching from the port city of Arica to the town of Putre to the East, is known for its pleasantly warm climate all-year-round, its diverse flora and fauna, and also for the sheer amount of historical and ancient artifacts that dot the area.
We begin the trip in the city of Arica, where we will explore and sightsee the traditional markets selling fresh produce of fruit and vegetables, before heading to the Azapa Valley, containing huge historical developments, such as mummies, with over 10,000 years of history.
We then wander through the magnificent Lluta Valley, notable for its fields of alfalfa and abundance of cacti. We also stop off at the certified national monument of the fort of Pukara de Copaquilla, before heading to the hauntingly beautiful near-ghost town of Socoroma, en route to our place for the night, Putre.
The subsequent 2 days we will set off from Putre each morning to visit various interesting sites, with highlights including the biosphere reserve of Lauca National Park, Chungara Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world at 4500m above sea level, the national monument village of Parinacota, the mesmerizing and idyllic Surire Salt Lake, and the marvelous variety of flora and fauna such as alpacas, llamas, flamingos, wetlands and forests.
The final night is spent in the border village of Colchane, and on the final day we set off from here to the awe-inspiring Giant of Atacama, the largest representation of a human being in the world, before our final place we visit being Humberstone, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and a ghost town located next to a famous nitrate mine.
Hopefully after these action-packed 4 days you will have fallen in love with northern Chile and gotten a true sense of the history and culture of the region.
