Carinthia is the most southern state in Austria and lies within the Eastern Alps, dominated by great lakes and soaring mountains. Many of the urban areas are located in the inner alpine basin in the lower lands. With a diversity of terrain there does exist a number of microclimates, while the state overall receives the largest average amount of sunshine per year.
An alpine climate dominates the country, given its largely mountainous terrain, and receives relatively high temperatures in the summer, averaging in the mid-20s.
