FAQs: Ice Climbing in China

What should I know about Ice Climbing China?

China is a vast and diverse country in the Northern Hemisphere. Counter intuitively, you have to head south in China to find the best ice climbing.

Sichuan province encompasses the beginning of the Tibetan plateau, which makes it an ideal spot for ice climbing in the depth of winter. Among the top spots in this stunningly scenic province is Mount Siguniang, in the Shuangqiao Valley.

The mountain boasts various ice falls that are perfectly suited for climbers of every level. Due to the dry and sunny nature of winter, it is ideal to climb up in the morning and get some great views out over the surroundings before the sun begins to set.

Outside of Sichuan province, there are also ice climbing opportunities in Himalayas in Tibet and the Tian Shan in Xinjiang. Of these two spots, ice climbing trips to Tibet are more popular. Again, counterintuitively, it is usually easiest to fly to Kathmandu, Nepal and cross the Chinese border by van to get to the best ice climbing spots.

Why should I choose China for my Ice Climbing adventure?

Stunning scenery

The mountains in southern and central China are astoundingly beautiful. Boasting lovely evergreen forests, rugged snow-capped peaks and verdant mountain meadows, there’s a lot to see. One of the best ways to get a bird's eye view of this magnificent scenery is to head on an ice climbing expedition.

See Giant Pandas

This incredibly rare and iconic animal calls Sichuan province home. Wild pandas live in the bamboo forests on the foothills of the same mountains in which we will climb. While you may not be able to see entirely wild pandas, there are chances to head out to reserves and see these magnificent beasts in their home environments.

Come for the culture

In between epic ice climbing ascents, be sure to take some time to explore the rich and unique culture of the region in which you are climbing. For example, Sichuan province is home to the Bashu culture. After climbing in the mountains, head to a typical restaurant for some local and spicy cuisine. Afterwards, be sure to take in a typical Sichuan opera.
