Located in the south of Europe comprising the boot-shaped peninsula, Italy is home to valleys, mountains and a collection of islands. The country borders France to the northwest, Switzerland to the north, Austria and Slovenia to the northeast. Italy also has a coastline of the Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea, Ligurian Sea, the Strait of Sicily, and the Sea of Sardinia, while also resting in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Alps of Italy receive a cold and snowy winter as well as mild summer. Among the higher peaks of the mountain range there are also glaciers.
Visit between December and March for ideal ice climbing conditions.
