### Secret Ice Climbing spot accessible from the heart of Sapporo

I introduce to you a 1-day ice climbing programme at my **secret ice climbing spot** that is only a **1-hour drive away from Sapporo city** and 45min approach in snowshoes. If you'll be staying in Niseko, I could pick you up there as well but please note that you will have to pay an extra to account for transportation costs.

Here, you can challenge yourself with 4 different short but vertical ice fall routes 15m high. The ice climbing grade here is WI4+ (highly technical WI4) and will all be on top ropes.

The best period to enjoy the ice falls here is from the beginning of January until about end of February.

\*Ice Climbing Grades:

WI4 – near-vertical steps of up to 10 metres, generally sustained climbing requiring placing protection screws from strenuous stances

##### **Required Levels:**

Beginner / Intermediate – You will need to have had a prior summer rock climbing experience, as you would need to know how to belay someone. You need to be fit enough to walk the 45min approach.

Beginners to ice climbing are very welcome!

Items such as ice axes, harness, helmet, and crampons can be rented at JPY 2,000 each. Snowshoes and poles are necessary for the approach and can be rented at JPY 1,000 a pair. Other ice climbing gears such as ice screws, quick draws etc. will be provided.If you'd like to lead (and not follow) then please bring your own gears.

**8:00am** – Meet at Sapporo and depart. We will drive for about an hour to our destination. A 45min approach by snowshoe trekking will take us to the ice fall!

**4:00pm** – We return to Sapporo. You can be dropped off at Sapporo station or your accommodation in Sapporo.

8am departure from Sapporo. Please let me know if you are staying at a hotel in Sapporo or arriving from other places, like Niseko, to Sapporo in the morning. Then we may be able to delay the departure to match the train arrival time.

Ice Climbing Day Trip from Sapporo

**Located in the Daisetsuzan National Park, Mount Tokachi (2077m) is the highest volcano in its group. The abundant snow that accumulates each winter provides an excellent terrain for mountaineering. Join a group for two days and enjoy winter alpine climbing in the region!**

In particular, I have chosen to climb the **north west ridge of Kamihoro**, a quite friendly route. We will climb using a single axe. In fact, the itinerary does not require a technical axe nor double axe. Access is easy and the views from Mount Kamihoro are stunning. Tokachi and Furano's views are impressive from here!

The winter and early spring are great not only for skiing in Hokkaido. In fact, I put together other alpine climbing as well as ice climbing programs for the season. If the dates for Mount Tokachi area don't suit you, have a look at the other options to join a group this season.

Mount Tokachi area 2-day alpine climbing, Japan

**Mount Furano is one of the mountains of the Tokachi volcanic group, in the island of Hokkaido. I organized a 2-day group program to practice winter alpine climbing in this mountain.** 

Furano is a town in Hokkaido known for the ski, in particular for the amazing backcountry options. But in this occasion I propose a different  approach to the mountain: reaching the summit of the white mountain!

I decided to take you up on the north face route of Mount Furano. The approach walk (from the car park to the pase of the route) will be 3-4 hours. And then the ascent on the snow and ice begins!It is a route that requires double technical axes. There are 6 climbing pitches on mixed snow and ice terrain. The level is intermediate-advanced.

We will be using a double axe for this winter climbing adventure. The ascent includes some steeper sections. ##### Throughout the beautiful Japanese island of Hokkaido there are numerous places to enjoy great ice climbing. And on this full day trip, I would like to guide you on the ice falls of Ofuyu.

Located **approximately two and a half hours from the capital city of Sapporo, Ofuyu** is home to **4 different ice falls**. Due to the variety of ice falls, there are climbing areas that range from **W1 to W4 levels**. Moreover, the falls reach heights of up to **40 meters**. And because the ice falls we will be climbing on are along the coastline, the views you will get to enjoy are extraordinary, and get better the higher you go.

**Ice climbing** is a physical activity. As a result, it is important that participants on this trip are in **good physical condition**. It is also important that participants have the necessary experience to climb the more challenging ice falls in **Ofuyu**. In the case of poor ice conditions in **Ofuyu**, we will change locations to nearby **Sounkyo**.

#### Another one of the beautiful ice climbing spots in Hokkaido, Japan, Jozankei is a delight for anybody who loves great climbing.

For a **full day**, I would like to guide you along the beautiful ice falls of **Jozankei**. Located only an **hour away from the city of Sapporo**, the available ice falls in the area are amazing. Also, the area around them is truly stunning. Thus giving you an all-encompassing experience that involves fun, excitement and fantastic views.

While only **twenty meters high**, the icefall at **Jozankei** is nonetheless measured at a technical level **between W3 and W4**. There are also two additional ice falls in the area as well, which will add to both the variety and the fun.

Due to the length of the trip and the closeness to **Sapporo**, this ice climbing trip makes for a great addition to any vacation you may be taking in **Hokkaido**.

Some ice climbing experience is recommended. However, you do not need to be an expert climber to enjoy this trip. But you should be in **good physical condition**, as ice climbing can be arduous, no matter the height of the icefall.

##### For a full day, I would like to guide you for some great ice climbing in Bifue. This fantastic climbing area is located near the city of Sapporo on the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Located between **one and one and a half hours away from the city of Sapporo**, **Bifue** is a fantastic ice climbing spot. And because of its close proximity to **Sapporo**, this trip makes for a great addition to a vacation you may be taking to the great city.

There are **3 different pitches** you can enjoy on this trip. Moreover, the technical difficulty level ranges from **W1 to W3**. Finally, the height of the waterfall you can climb on this trip goes as high as **fifty meters**. As a result of that height, after reaching the top, you will get to enjoy some truly amazing views of the surrounding area.

Another great aspect of this trip is the icefall at **Bifue** is an inland waterfall. As a result, you will also get to enjoy a **scenic hike** through the snow along a lovely stream that glistens during the winter season.

While this trip is ideal for beginner level climbers, as well as higher-level climbers, it is important that **all climbers are in good physical condition**.
