Mountain Biking in Playa del Carmen: Top Outdoor Adventures Awaiting You

Situated on the northwestern shore of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is a popular tourist hotspot.

While many activities, such as hiking and snorkeling are popular at the resort town, heading out on a mountain biking adventure is easily the best way to experience this stunning place.

Aside from the cenotes in the nearby tropical rainforest, there are plenty of other great places to explore on a mountain bike. Among these is heading on a day-long tour of the Isla Mujeres, which sits just off the coastline of Yucatan. Here, mountain bikers can ride along more stunning beaches and visit an ancient Mayan temple as well.

Back on the mainland, there are plenty of other great cycling options. One of the most popular is to head to the small resort town of Tulum and go on a cycling tour along its coastline and through the surroundings. Sitting just to the south of Playa del Carmen, in the verdant Mayan tropical rainforest, are three cenotes: Grand Cenote, Escondido, Cenote Cristal. Heading out on a mountain bike to visit and experience them all is highly recommended. Going with an experienced guide will shed some light onto the area’s history, culture and geology as well.

Go to the beach

Sitting at the very tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is home to some of the best beaches in the entire world. When you're not out on the trails, get a beach umbrella, towel and a bathing suit and enjoy the long stretches of white sand beaches and turquoise blue water. Due to its proximity to the equator, you’ll be able to enjoy warm and pleasant water temperatures year-round.

Throughout the year, average daily temperatures in Playa del Carmen are in the mid-20s (mid-70s) with plenty of sunshine. Summer is the wettest time of year, when there are about 12 days of rain per month. The rest of the year is much drier.
