What should I know about Mountain Climbing Garmisch-Partenkirchen?

Situated on Germany’s southern border with Austria, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the unofficial capital of mountain climbing in Germany and it is easy to see why.

Boasting stunning scenery as well as access to two of Germany’s most iconic peaks (Zugspitze and Alpsitze), there are plenty of reasons to come and climb in southern Bavaria.

The climbing the two aforementioned peaks can be done over a weekend by heading from the Alpspitze to the Zugspitze via the arete of Jubiläumsgrat. The climbing is quite challenging, but the views along the way are well-worth the effort of getting them.

Crossing the border into Austria in order to climb Ehrwalder Almbahn is another popular option for mountaineers visiting the area.

The iconic pyramidal peak of the Alpspitze should be at the top of any mountain climber's checklist when they head to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The 2,628-meter high peak boasts incredible views of southern Germany and offers plenty of high-quality climbing on pristine limestone. Getting to its summit also takes just a day, but does require intermediate-rock climbing skills.
