Description

Discover some of the most impressive landscapes of northern Albania on this 8-day self-guided trek through the Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains.

The journey begins in Shkodër before continuing through the Drin gorges and across spectacular Komani Lake by ferry. From there, you travel into Valbona Valley, where limestone peaks rise above forests, rivers and traditional mountain settlements.

Over the following days, hike through the high country above Valbona and complete one of the defining stages of the trip: the crossing of Valbona Pass at 1,811 meters. This sustained mountain route links Valbona and Theth on foot and offers wide views across both valleys.

From Theth, choose between several hiking options around Peja Pass, Denelli and Nenrreth before continuing downstream toward Nderlysaj. The journey finishes with a hike to the Blue Eye, a clear karst spring surrounded by forest and rocky mountain terrain.

The full itinerary includes six hiking days covering approximately 54 km, with around 2,900 meters of ascent and 3,425 meters of descent. The standard routes include hiking days of up to approximately 6 hours, while some optional alternatives are longer and more demanding.

This is a self-guided trip, so you hike independently using route and travel information provided through the GUIBO app. Accommodation, scheduled transfers, the Komani Lake ferry and luggage transport are arranged in advance, allowing you to focus on the hiking while moving at your own pace.

Arrival and departure can be organized through either Tirana or Podgorica, including mixed combinations such as Tirana arrival with Podgorica departure or vice versa. There is no price difference between the four airport combinations. If you depart through Podgorica, the final overnight is in Shkodër rather than Tirana.

Send a request to book this 8-day self-guided trek and experience the Albanian Alps independently, with the main trip logistics arranged for you.

Depending on your arrival time, explore the pedestrian center, visit the Marubi Photo Museum or head to Rozafa Castle for views over Lake Shkodra and the surrounding rivers.

This is also a good opportunity to purchase any final supplies before heading into the mountains.

Your self-guided travel and route information will be available through the GUIBO app.

Day 2: Komani Lake and Valbona Valley

Leave Shkodër early and travel through the Drin gorges toward Komani Lake.

Cross the lake by public ferry, travelling between steep rock walls and remote lakeside settlements before reaching Fierza. Continue by road toward Bajram Curri and into Valbona Valley.

Once in the mountains, complete a short introductory hike beside clear streams and through beech forest beneath the limestone peaks of the Albanian Alps.

Depending on the weather and conditions, there may be an opportunity to swim in the river or a mountain pool.

Spend the night in Valbona.

Accommodation: Hotel or mountain guesthouse, private en-suite room Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner Transfers: Approximately 3 hours by road plus 3 hours by boat Location: Valbona

Day 3: Hiking above Valbona

A short transfer leads toward the trailhead near Kukaj. From here, hike through meadows and beech forest toward a former military hut at approximately 1,650 meters, now used seasonally by shepherds.

If conditions, time and your chosen route allow, continue higher toward the Montenegro border and a border marker at approximately 2,045 meters.

From the pass, enjoy wide views across Valbona and Theth and the surrounding limestone peaks.
