Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive to Albania

Welcome to the Balkans! You have the option to join the group transfer in Tirana, either at the city center (14:00) or later at the TIA airport, no later than 15:00. Upon arrival in the afternoon, you'll reach Shkodra (84km/2.5hr) and check into the centrally located hotel.

If time allows, we can stop by the Rozafa castle at the entrance of Shkodra to enjoy its fabulous views, offering a glimpse of the breathtaking landscapes you'll encounter in the Albanian Alps during the upcoming days.

Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll through the pedestrian area, adorned with bourgeois townhouses that serve as a reminder of the city's prestigious past. Experience the city’s Italian flair and explore the bustling bazaar, where you can purchase dried fruits and other snacks.

After a delicious dinner, take the opportunity to discuss the exciting adventures planned for the following days. Perhaps conclude the evening with a celebratory toast at one of the nearby bars. However, remember not to stay up too late, as tomorrow’s transfer begins before sunrise!

If you arrive early, feel free to inquire about extension nights in Tirana & Shkodra, as well as recommendations for places to visit or activities to enjoy in both cities.

Day 2: Exploring the Accursed Mountains

Starting early, we'll drive through the Drin Gorges and to the Komani Lake (58 km/2h). This reservoir, resembling a Norwegian fjord, winds its way through sheer rock walls, offering one of the most captivating routes into the Albanian Alps. Board the ferry, which makes several stops to pick up chatty locals from remote villages before arriving at Fierze.

Continuing by car, venture deeper into the highlands of the Valbona National Park, pausing for a light lunch in the small city of Bajram Curri. By early afternoon, you'll arrive in the village of Valbona, characterized by its stone tower-houses.

A gentle warm-up walk follows a crystal-clear stream through ancient beech forests, adorned with the sweetest strawberries. Along the way, take the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim in the ice-cold river or a secluded pond.

The walk concludes at a cozy guesthouse in upper Valbona, with the jagged peaks towering above, igniting anticipation for the adventures to come tomorrow.Tonight, indulge in a home-cooked meal and rest after this exhilarating introduction to the Accursed Mountains.

Day 3: Hike towards Doberdol valley

Today, we'll start with a 50-minute journey to the secluded village of Cerem, where your hiking adventure begins amidst enchanting flower carpets. Indulge in forest fruits, marvel at the vibrant flora, and be captivated by the stunning vistas of Mt. Kolata (2,534 m).

Arriving at the rim of the deep-cut Gashi River Canyon, you'll follow the high route through the nature reserve's conifer forest, witnessing the dramatic shift in terrain from the Western to the Eastern Alps. Here, mountain slopes adorned with small alpine pastures like Balqin offer opportunities to pause for coffee and raki.

Your ultimate destination is the glacial-shaped valley of Doberdol (1,750 m), where time seems to stand still and animals roam freely across the grazing grounds. In this pristine environment, locals maintain a harmonious relationship with nature, reminiscent of a bygone era. Doberdol's serene ambiance acts as a sanctuary for the soul, offering a chance to reconnect with your inner self.

While staying in the humble shepherd huts, you may sacrifice some modern comforts in exchange for the warmth of genuine hospitality. After a hearty home-cooked dinner, gather around the bonfire to gaze at the stars and learn about the seasonal lifestyle of the shepherds, enriching your understanding of this timeless way of life.

Day 4: Three Border Peak

Bid farewell to your gracious hosts as you embark on a steep ascent out of the valley, toward the summit of Mt. Trekufiri (2,366 m). This peak marks the meeting point of Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro, offering sweeping vistas of the borderlands. The path, adorned with blueberries, winds its way into Montenegro, encircling Mt. Bogicevica (2,374 m) and leading to the secluded Lake Hrid. This tranquil pond serves as a haven for newts, salamanders, and fireflies. It is steeped in legend, believed to possess rejuvenating powers and serving as a meeting place for fairies during full moons. At an altitude of 1,900 meters, a refreshing dip in its waters is truly invigorating!

Continuing through dense, moss-covered pine forests, the trail leads to a cluster of seasonal huts known as "Katun." Further along the rugged path, you'll reach the expansive settlement of Babino Polje. Here, you'll find accommodation at simple yet welcoming mountain huts, perched on the edge of the wilderness. Your friendly hosts will introduce you to the delights of traditional Montenegrin home-cooking, ensuring a memorable stay amidst the rugged beauty of the region.

Day 5: Discover Grbaja Valley

The Grbaja Valley stands out as one of the most impressive destinations in the Balkans. In the morning, you'll venture into this narrow valley, situated between the imposing karst towers of Karanfili (2,461 m). Known as one of the most rugged peaks in the Prokletije range, it's a coveted dream for many climbers.

As you ascend through a shaded, enchanted beech forest, you'll emerge into an alpine meadow surrounded by a multitude of peaks. The interconnected ridge trail offers a series of stunning panoramic viewpoints, ultimately leading to the summit of Popadija and Taljanka (2,056 m), the highest peaks in the vicinity. From this vantage point, the formidable walls of the mountains appear almost within arm's reach, while vistas extend across the border into Albania's Kelmend region.

After descending steeply from the ridge, you'll find yourself back on the shaded forest path, bringing the exhilarating hike to a close. Once back at the valley floor, you can unwind at one of the charming beer gardens, savoring a cold drink and relishing the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Continuing on a transfer, you'll journey to a family-run guesthouse in Vusanje. Here, you can opt for a leisurely evening stroll to the nearby Grla Waterfall, or simply take in the breathtaking views of the Accursed Mountains from the veranda.

Day 6: Ropojana Valley

Journeying up the Ropojana Valley, carved by a 26 km long glacier, we pause at a pupil-shaped karst spring, where an ice-cold river originates from melting snow high in the mountains. Here, a weathered border stone serves as a poignant reminder of the once tightly sealed borders of Communist Albania. Passing through the mountain-framed corridor, we encounter sights such as a dry lake, shepherd huts, and an abandoned military post as we venture deeper into the heart of the Albanian Alps.

Dominating the landscape is the imposing peak of Mt. Arapi (2,217m), often referred to as the canine tooth, towering above the Thethi National Park and forming the tallest wall in the Balkans. Upon reaching Peja Pass (1,711m), your guide will assess the feasibility of summiting the peak. Those opting out of the challenging ascent, suitable only for experienced and sure-footed hikers, may rest at the pass or descend with the horsemen.

Descending via a steep yet well-trodden caravan path, we make our way to a local watering hole before a short ride brings us to a guesthouse situated in the vibrant heart of the village.

Day 7: Unveil the Albanian highlands

While in Theth, don't miss the opportunity to explore the iconic church and lock-in tower (kulla), historically providing refuge to men facing blood feuds. Delve into the rich history of the "kanun" and the former highland law code, as the site also serves as the trailhead to Nderlysaj.

Hike through the water channels to reach the renowned Grunas waterfall. Descend along a well-trodden bridle path by the riverbed to the tranquil hamlet of Nderlysa, where a hearty lunch awaits. From there, you have the option to continue hiking to the colorful karst spring known as the "Blue Eye," or simply spend a leisurely afternoon swimming amidst the glacier-shaped rock formations.

In the late afternoon, embark on a scenic ride across the Thore Pass (1,630 m) for the journey back to Shkodra (75 km/2h). Anticipate arriving in Shkodra after 5 pm, where you'll settle in for an overnight stay.

Please note that public transport may be unavailable, so it's advisable to make necessary arrangements. Feel free to reach out to us to arrange private transfers to Tirana, airports, or other destinations, as well as hotel accommodations before or after the trip, where luggage storage facilities are available.

Day 8: Departure day

Following breakfast, take some time to stroll through the pedestrian area and indulge in any last-minute souvenir shopping. You have the option to join the group transfer to Tirana (airport or city). For those eager to extend their journey, consider exploring the town further, venturing to the nearby beaches in Velipoja and Ulcinj (Montenegro), immersing yourself in Albania's modernity in the capital of Tirana, or enjoying beach holidays along the Albanian Riviera (with a travel time of 5-7 hours).

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for joining us on this adventure, and we sincerely hope you've had a memorable experience. We also hope that this won't be your last visit to the country, known for its warm hospitality, majestic mountains, and sun-drenched beaches. If you wish to extend your stay, feel free to inquire about discounts (up to 10%) on combined trips, transfers, and extension nights in Tirana, Shkodra, or elsewhere.

There's plenty to discover, with each town deserving a full day of exploration!

Thank you explore-share for a wonderful via feratta experience. We have been wanting to learn for a long time but don't have the facilities in Scotland. The guide Mitja was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, answering all my many questions and providing advice. On the day head to take another group but he quickly arranged another guide Borut, who was brilliant. We had a fantastic morning learning via ferrata at Hvadnik in the gorge. It gave us the confidence to later hire our own equipment and go out in Mojstrana. Altogether a five star + experience. Thank you.
