Puncturing the pristine rugged landscape of the Karakoram mountain range are the Trango Towers, giant rocky and pointed formations like spires rising from the ridgeline.

Standing in the extreme north of Pakistan, the Trango Towers are located within the territory of Gilgit-Baltistan. It is home to some of the highest, largest and challenging cliffs that attract climbers from all over the world.

The towers all rise from the same ridge that is blanketed in snow. The combination of high altitude, steep walls and high technical levels mean that climbing here presents some of the most difficult and rewarding challenges in the world.

There is Great Trango, the highest point among the towers at 6,286 meters. Its menacing east face is possibly the world’s greatest vertical drop.

Then there is Trango Tower, which is also called the Nameless Tower, that rises to 6,239 meters. The rock spire spurts an impressive 1,000 meters high from the ridgeline.

The shorter spire of Trango Monk stands to the north, while moving further forwards the ridge loses its iconic granite wall features.

In 1977 he Great Trango was first conquered via a route of ice ramps and gullies before its climax on the south face.

It wasn’t until 1992 that the intimidating east face was climbed by Xaver Bongard and John Middendorf.

Climbing the Trango Towers requires excellent fitness and a mountain of previous climbing experience, with the stamina to complete this 35-day adventure.
