Arrival in Tanzania. We will meet you at the Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) for your transfer to the lodge. Meet the other members of your group during the trip briefing and gear check.
We drive to the Londorossi Gate (7,742 ft/2,360 m). After completing registration and paperwork with the national park authorities, anothe 30-45 minute drive takes us to the trailhead. From there, we trek through a lovely rainforest landscape, filled with lush green vegetation, to our first campsite – Big Tree Camp (9,137 ft/2,785 m).
Distance: 4.8 km
Altitude gain: 1,395 ft/425 m
Today we exit the rainforest and cross into the moors, where we will have incredible views over the surrounding Shira Plateau as we walk east toward Shira Camp (11,496 ft/3,504 m).
Distance: 7.9 km
Elevation gain: 2,359 ft/719 m
We trek to the southeast today as we continue our tough ascent through the moor. Kibo (the mountain’s volcanic peak) looms above us, beckoning us onward. Finally, we reach Moir Hut (13,651 ft/4,161 m), where we stop for the night at a higher altitude.
Distance: 9.4 km
Elevation gain: 2,155 ft/657 m
From Moir Hut, we climb the lava tower reaching a high point of 15,200 ft (4,633 m). From this high point, where we join with the Machame Route, we follow the trail down the valley to the Barranco Camp (13,080 ft/3,986 m) situated with the mountain’s alpine terrain. Sleeping at a lower point will help us acclimatize.
Distance: 7km
Elevation gain: 1,550 ft/473m
We begin the day by scrambling over Barranco Wall. From there, it’s an easy walk down to Karanga Camp (13,230 ft/4,034 m), where we spend a leisurely afternoon.
Distance: 5km
Elevation gain: 150 ft/46 m
We should be fully acclimatized by this point in the trek. We head to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue onward to Kosovo Camp (15,950 ft/4,863 m), where we spend the night. This camp is far less crowded and closer to the summit, making the following day’s push that much shorter. Early night before our long summit day.
Distance: 5km
Elevation gain: 2,720 ft/829 m
We rise a little after midnight to begin our final ascent. Around sunrise, we reach Stell Point, which is a short distance away from the summit at Uhuru Peak (19,344 ft/5,896 m), where we celebrate our accomplishment and take in the scenery from the top of Africa. We then descend back to Kosovo Camp in time for lunch, and continue to Millennium Camp where we spend the night.
Distance: 7km ascending Summit, 10 descending km to Millennium Camp
Elevation gain: 3,290 ft/1,003 m to summit
Elevation loss: 6,840 ft/2,085 m from summit
We continue making our way down the mountain, eventually arriving at Mweka Gate (5,900 ft/1,800 m). From there, vehicle transfer back to our hotel in Moshi, where we rest and relax and enjoy the amenities of the lodge.
End of services – depart for the Kilimanjaro Airport and your flight home, or continue on to other adventures in Tanzania.
