Description

Widely known as the first recorded climb in the Lake District, Broad Stand is certainly one of the most classic scrambling routes in the region.

Located on Scafell mountain, we will make a rope-assisted ascent up to the peak’s summit via Fat Mans chimney and the Broad Stand.

We will start our day by heading up through Fat Mans Chimney, which is a nice warm up for the rest of the scramble that is to come.

Once we’ve passed through here, we head up over Broad Stand, which is pretty challenging during the best of conditions and quite a bit more difficult if the route is wet (hence the rope assistance).

The views from the top are well worth the effort though and after the scramble you will feel rewarded looking down what you’ve just come up!

This is a difficult scramble, rated as a level 3, the most difficult rating for a scrambling ascent. Previous experience is very helpful, but not 100 percent necessary as long as you have the appropriate level of mental and physical fitness.

I hold the Mountain Instructors Award (MIA) which is the highest ‘summer’ outdoor qualification in the UK, and the Winter Mountain Leader qualification. Had a great day out with my instructor Paul who was very helpful in introducing me to trad climbing and getting me to be very comfortable on the rocks. We did six 1-pitch climbs and one multi-pitch climb while enjoying the phenomenal view of Langdale amongst many Herdwick sheeps. Would have extended the experience if I had more time and definitely would do it again.
