While all of western Austria is mountainous, the best canyoning is generally found in the southern states of the country, with a few notable exceptions. Due to how spread out some of the best spots are and the difficulty of navigating the mountainous terrain, it is generally best to pick one spot that piques your interest and save the rest for another time. The Frauenbach Gorge is one popular location for advanced canyoners and is also located near Kötschach-Mauthen, which is more appropriate for beginners and families. Vorarlberg sits all the way in the western reaches of the country and is another popular family location. Regardless of where you choose to go, you will be met by amazing views and beautiful landscapes
